12Liaison Activities
13Open Source Portfolio
- OSPI board has shut down and operates in the
context of the Sakai project - Chris Coppola was elected to the Sakai Foundation
board - As of Sakai 2.1.2 OSP is a drop-in set of Sakai
tools - OSP developers are now Sakai
- framework committers
- This has been a 9 month effort
- requiring very close coordination
14uPortal
- Sakai released beta of WSRP 1.0 in Sakai 2.1
- Sakai will release beta Sakai JSR-168 Portlets in
Sakai 2.1.2 - Joint Sakai/uPortal Architect's meeting September
2005 - Joint meeting of JA-Sig board and Sakai Board
February 2006 - New requirement - Sakai RSS
- Community led development
- going forward
- Sakai Requirements Process
- JASIG Requirements Process
15OKI DR / Twin Peaks
- Released early support for the DR OSID in Sakai
2.1 - Jeff Kahn and Jim Eng
- Plan to significantly improve user interface
integration in Sakai 2.2 - Make it so that wherever Sakai can use its
internally stored materials - it can also use
Repository materials just as easily. - IU-Led Mellon funded effort to enhance this from
the library side

18Fedora
- Attended Fedora Users Group at Rutgers in May
2005 - Small effort working on Sakai to Fedora
connection for research applications at UM - Exporting Sakais collaborative
- content into Fedora and
- developing some basic
- disseminators for viewing.
19LionShare
- Two day meeting and review at Penn State in
August 2005 - Discussed common technologies and possible points
of connection - Still a ways away
LionShare is working hard on embedded problems
including federated identity and SAML.
20DSpace / SIMILE
- Meeting December 2005
- RDF coordination - aligning future Semantic Sakai
(RDF) directions with SIMILE RDF activities - DSpace giving an invited presentation at the
Community Source Week conference in Vancouver May
2006
21VUE
- Working on allowing VUE to retrieve RDF-based
networks from Sakai - VUErls
- Allow VUE to put a visual layer on top of Sakai
tools, sites, etc to organize and share Sakai
maps using VUE - This is under early discussion with a few early
code explorations
22PLEX
- Personal Learning Environment
- Funded by JISC/CETIS
- Scott Wilson, Oleg Liber, Phillpipe Beuvior
- Eclipse-Based Desktop Application
- Participated in CETIS PLEX Workship - November
2005 - Focus is on users organizing their educational
life (iTunes-like) - PLEX is based on RDF as an organization principle
(FOAF, etc) - Added Support for Sakai to PLEX - contributed to
PLEX code base - should be in the next release

- Encouraged by Cambridge University, LAMS produced
and distribute a Sakai-LAMS gateway - Meeting at Educause between LAMS and Sakai
- Upcoming meeting at MELCOE (March 2006) for joint
LAMS-Sakai Architecture review - Goal Allow LAMS to be an alternate presentation
framework for Sakai basic capabilities

34Summary
- Sakai has made the transition from a project to a
foundation and community - Liaison to other activities continues to be a
core part of the Sakai approach - At some level, the goal for each of our projects
needs to be a useful component in some
higher-level architecture - To truly turn our work into Lego blocks we need
extremely powerful standard data exchange
capabilities - RDF and other efforts are what
will get us there.
