Country info
  • A big tradition in Sweden in the homes is
where the oldest daughter is portrayed as Lucia
the Queen of Light. She dresses up in a white
gown and wears a crown of candles on her head to
serve the family. She wakes her parents by
singing the Italian song, Saint Lucia. She
serves her family coffee, buns, cookies, and
occasionally glogg (which is a mulled wine).
  • Introduced to Sweden from Germany, the
Christmas tree has been a part of Christmas since
the 1700s. The custom has only become general in
the present century. A family usually brings it
1 or 2 days before Christmas to decorate it.

  • The excitement of Christmas in Sweden starts
on the first Sunday of Advent which is when the
first Advent candle is lit. Every Sunday before
Christmas, an Advent candle is lit with growing
    anticipation. The feasting and celebration
begins on December 13 with St. Lucia Day. Legend
has it that St. Lucia Day is the longest night of
the year. Today nearly every town, school, and
day-care center has their own Lucia.

Traditional Foods Served
  • The most traditional food served in Sweden
at Christmas is Lutfisk. This Lutfisk is
sun-cured cod served in cream sauce. Lutfisk is
most likely a throwback to a period of fasting
    from pre-Reformation times. The traditional
feast celebrated also includes a dipping in the
kettle. The family and guests dip bits of dark
bread in a pot filled with pork, sausage, and
    corned beef.

6
  • A smorgasbord Christmas meal eaten on
Christmas Eve includes varieties of shellfish,
pork, cooked and raw herring fish, caviar,
    cheeses and brown beans.
