- He was an Italian scholar, poet, and early
humanist - He was known as the Father of Humanism
- He was a extremely intelligent man
- A lot of other writers looked up to him

Rime Sparse - he also created the sonnet
- He was first found in Avignon,Italy in the 1300s
- Later all around Italy.

Bologna School in Italy
- He went to school at Montpellier from 1316-1320
ad then went to Bologna from 1320- 1326 - His father Ser Petracco made him study the law
- The only thing he was really interested in was
writing and Latin literature - When his father died in 1326 he left school and
went back to Avignon to study literature

- After school he wrote the poem Africa
- The poem was about the second Punic War. General
Hannibal leads his army to invade Italy which is
a success. Then the Roman invade North Africa.

Laura
- In.1327 Petrarch saw a women by the name of Laura
SainteClaire d Avignon (a church) - He then wrote 366 poems about her in Rime
Sparse (scattered rhymes) - Other poets started to copy his style
- They later made all of his poems into a book
called Canzoniere (songbook)

- He described her a lovely, fair-haired, with a
modest dignified bearing - Nobody knows who she is
- They dont think that they had any contact with
each other - She denied him because she was married
- She then died in 1348
- He said that he found it even harder to live when
she was dead then when he never saw her

he was known throught the country - People say that he was a celebrity
- He was crowned in Rome and honored for using
different techniques of writing - He then became ambassador

one and I would have struggled with it longer had
not premature death bitter but salutary for me,
extinguished the cooling flames. I certainly wish
I could say that I have always been entirely free
from desire of the flesh, but I would be lying if

- He got married to a women who is unknown and had
a baby girl in 1343 named Francesca - He settled down in 1367 with his family and died
in Arqua in Euganean Hills in July of 1374 - He gave his library of manuscripts to Venice
- They formed part of the book Bibliotheca Marci
