per year, and to encourage reading for pleasure - To support students in becoming more proficient

3Why a Million Words?
- frequent readers showed higher reading
achievement (1994, Rogers, et al.) - reading volume predicted reading comprehension
achievement (1999, Guthrie, et al.) - The connection between voluntary reading and
powerful literacy is that people learn to read by
reading (2006, Reading Matters, by Ross,
Krashen)

the students, regarding how to log their reading. - Provide information and instruction for the
parents families, so that they can be active
participants in the Read a Million Words,
Seattle! project. - Celebrate the success of reaching the reading
benchmarks with each student!
