Security Challenges
  • Security only became a consideration when threats
    began to emerge
  • ISP lacks security experts
  • Increased number of broadband subscribers
    increased risk in its network
  • Lack of trained security administrators in
    various Government LAN
  • Unaware of Phishing scam emails
  • Lack of educational awareness on such threats
  • Lack of policies to mitigate such risk

Security Initiatives
  • ISP maintains two anti-virus servers
  • One server runs the enterprise edition of
    Symantec Anti-Virus
  • To protect the machines in both the corporate and
    public networks
  • Other server runs Symantec Mail Security for SMTP
  • To scan all email transiting through the ISPs
    email system
  • Both servers are configured for virus definition
    updates
  • ISP enforces strict policy against hacker-type
    activities
  • Attacks into FSMTC network from external sources
    will resulted in the banning of the sources
    entire network

SPAM Challenges
  • Unsolicited, unwanted, inappropriate bulk email
    are still on the rise
  • 100 of SPAM emails originated from outside of
    FSM
  • Spammers always find ways to deliver SPAM email
    on going practice
  • SPAM clogs the transmission pipe and deplete
    storage space
  • Lack of SPAM policy
  • Lack of educational awareness of such threats

SPAM Initiatives
  • ISP
  • maintains black list of all known sources of SPAM
  • has evaluated a few anti-spam applications, most
    notable Symantecs premium anti-spam add-on
    package to Mail Security
  • has begun to investigate Sender Policy Framework
    (SPF) and Digital Keys
  • has just started exploring migration to a new
    email platform.
  • The Government is working on formulating a
    Network Security and SPAM Policy
