Title: CASES OF RESIDENTIAL OPEN BUILDING
1CASES OF RESIDENTIAL OPEN BUILDING
- I would like to show you many images of housing
projects in several countries over the past
decade. Each one in its own way is a good
example of the kind of architecture I am
advocating an architecture of accommodating
form.
2The United States
3495 West Street
- An architect / developer in New York City
recently built a new building in which individual
families could fit-out their own interiors. A
number of similar buildings have recently been
built. - Many old buildings around the country are being
changed to housing in which each unit is
different.

5The Banner Building
In Seattle, Washington, a developer hired an
architect to design an open building for sale.
Each unit is entirely different, designed by a
different architect and constructed by a
different builder.

12The Netherlands
The Netherlands is one of the countries where
this approach to housing first got started.
Recently, the national government has decided
that a more consumer-oriented approach to housing
is a good thing. As a result, many companies and
organizations now support housing processes in
which the individual household has more choice.
13Papendrecht / Molenvliet
One of the first large housing projects of this
kind was built in the village of Papendrecht, a
city near Rotterdam. It was built in 1977 and is
still in good shape. Recently, a Japanese
research team visited it and published a
post-occupancy report.

17Keyenburg
Another project was built in Keyenburg. It has
152 apartments some of which are for elderly
people. It is a very popular area. A number of
apartments have changed.

20Patrimoniums Woningen
In the case of renovating an existing
building, the project in Voorburg is a good
example. A large development company wanted to
upgrade its stock of buildings to make them more
attractive. The buildings had been built in 1960
but were becoming obsolete.
They decided to upgrade the building
one-unit-at-a time. Later they upgraded the base
building. The building continues to be improved
gradually, using a variety of interior fit-out
products. The one I will show is the Matura
Infill System.
