passenger safety technicians teach parents and
caregivers best practices for installing and
using their childs safety seat

- SKBU awarded grants to 30 coalitions through a
competitive grant process - These grants were to be used to create and
operate inspection stations - UAW-GM funding made these grants possible

- intended to be used as seed money
- used for seats, staffing, operating and
administrative costs - designed as the initial step of a three year
plan, with reductions in year two and again in
year three - awarded with the intention that the CSSIS would
be self sustaining at the end of the three year

or state Coalition Board of Directors, CPS
Committee or Task Team - Understand and utilize Levels 1 - 4
- Cultivate a lasting Chevrolet partnership - Start
a CSSIS!!
18Making the Initial Connection
- Coordinator contacts Wes (West Coast) or Alexis
(East Coast) with the name(s) and address(es) of
potential dealership(s) - Coordinator provides prior dealership history
- Wes or Alexis
- Contacts GM Regional Manager who then identifies
the dealership contact (2-3 weeks) - Receives contact name and mails out a packet of
information with a letter explaining the national
partnership and the local coalition contact - Calls the dealership and pitches the program
- Provides the coalition coordinator with contact
information - Coalition coordinator contacts the dealership and
defines the partnership. If the dealer is not
interested we will move on to the next dealership
listed

- Dealer provides current child passenger safety
literature in showrooms and service areas.
20Level Two
- Educate Chevrolet dealership sales and service
staff with a half-day awareness workshop
conducted by the local Safe Kids coalition.
21Level Three
- Ask The Expert
- A certified technician from your Safe Kids
network provides instructional information to
staff, parents and customers at the dealership.
Incorporate this activity into an existing
dealership promotion or special initiative.
22Level Four
- Host a Car Seat Check Up Event
- Once the dealership has completed Levels 1-3 and
has a clear understanding of the Safe Kids
Worldwide/Chevrolet partnership they are now
ready to host a car seat check up event with
their coalition.
23Dealership Ph.D.
- Establish a CSSIS
- Once a coalition, general manager and owner have
established a seasoned relationship, they may
choose to implement a CSSIS at the dealership.

- Dealer Liaison is a dealership employee who has
the working knowledge of a CSSIS and has the
authority to meet coalition needs to provide a
successful community program.

- Invite a dealer rep. to a board meeting and
recruit for board membership - Develop an annual schedule and incorporate
quarterly car seat check up events with the
dealer - Be consistent in reporting back to the dealership
- Understand and respect their business
- Work closely with them on advertising
- Become part of their team and them yours
- Be clear on the expectations of the partnership

40Time Line (Proposed)
- We are currently negotiating a new 5 year
contract with GM/Chevrolet - Contingent on this new contract, we anticipate
offering CSSIS specific agreements for a period
of 6 months (January 1 through June 30) - November 15, 2005
- Existing Sites (6 month contract with 1 year
option) - Pilot Sites (6 month contract)
