- Vitamin
- - A vitamin is any organic compounds
required by the body in small amounts for
metabolism, to protect health, and for proper
growth in children. - - They also assist in the formation
of hormones, blood cells, nervous-system
chemicals,and genetic materials.

3Types of Vitamins
- Fat Soluble Vitamins
- - Vitamins A, D, E, and K.
- - Are consumed with fat - containing foods,
and can be stored in the bodys fat - - Does not have to be consumed daily.
- Water Soluble Vitamins
- - Vitamins B-8 and C.
- - Cannot be stored.
- - Must be consumed frequently.

- Vitamin D
- - Vitamin D is the only vitamin that the
body can manufacture. - All of vitamins must be derived from the diet.
- A well-balance diet contains all of the necessary
vitamins needed for the body.

6Vitamin A
- A fat-soluble vitamin which can be found in
green and yellow vegetables, as well as dairy
products. - It is important to the health of the outer layer
of the cells in the skin and organs maintenance
of mucous membranes, bones, teeth, vision, and
reproduction. - This vitamin can be found in the following
- - Carrots, broccoli, squash, spinach,
kale, sweet potatoes, milk, butter, cheese, egg
yolk, liver, and fish-liver.

- A water-soluble vitamin which can be found in
yeast, eggs, liver, seed germs, and vegetables. - It is important to carbohydrate metabolism and
has been found to prevent diseases in the nervous
system. - Vitamin B is also known as vitamin B complex or
thiamine.

- The following are other types of B vitamins
- - Thamine (Vitamin B1)
- - Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
- - Niacin (Vitamin B3)
- - Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6)
- - Coblalamin (Vitamin B12)
- - Folic Acid
- - Panothenic Acid
- All of the B vitamins above can be found in areas
of the food pyramid. -
9Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid)
- A water-soluble vitamin which can be found in
fruits and leafy vegetables. - This vitamin is essential for the formation and
maintaince of collagen which supports the
formation of many of the body structures, bones,
and teeth.
- This vitamin can be found in the following
sources - - Citrus fruits, strawberries, cantaloupe,
pineapple, guava, broccoli, Brussels sprouts,
tomatoes, spinach kale, green peppers, cabbage,
and turnips.
10Vitamin D
- A fat-soluble vitamins which is stored in the
body. Because it can be stored in the body
excessive consumption can cause vitamin
poisoning. - This vitamin is often added to milk and can also
be obtained from egg yolks, liver, and tuna. - This vitamin is essential for the formation of
bones and teeth.
11Vitamin E
- A fat-soluble vitamin which is an essential
nutrient in many of the vegetables that we eat. - This vitamin is important in forming red blood
cells and muscles. It is also essential for the
fertility in humans. - This vitamin can be found in the following
sources - - Vegetable oils, wheat germ, liver, and
leafy green vegetables.
12Vitamin K
- A fat-soluble vitamin which is necessary for the
clotting of blood. - The richest sources of vitamin K are alfalfa and
fish liver. - Vitamin K can also be found in the following
dietary sources - - Leafy vegetables, egg yolks, soybean oil,
and liver.
