and sex?
  • Helps determine BMI
  • BMI(weight(lbs)/(height(in)2))704.5
  • Obese BMI greater than or equal to 30
  • Overweight BMI from 25 to 29.9

4
Overweight Students
  • The national statistics show that 17 of male
students are found to be overweight and 14 of
    females.
  • Our data indicates that approximately 33 of
male students are found to be overweight and 8
    of females.
  • More generally, statistics showed that 15 of
    adolescents are overweight.
  • Our data indicates that approximately 25 of
both males and females are overweight.

5
Obese Students
  • The national statistics show that 12 of male
students are found to be obese and 8 of females.
  • Our data indicates that only 4 of males were
    obese and 9 of females.
  • More generally, statistics showed that 23.2 of
    high school graduates were obese.
  • Our data indicates that only 7 of high school
    seniors are obese.

6
Question 2 What type of family structure did
you have as a child?
  • Students with both parents should have a lower
BMI than those in a single parent home.
  • 47 out of 65 females lived with both parents
  • 36 out of 45 males lived with both parents
  • 75 of the students surveyed live with both
    parents

7
SO
  • Girls who lived with both parents had a higher
BMI than those who lived in a single parent home.
  • Boys who lived with both parents had a lower
    BMI, however.

8
Question 3 What type of job do you hold, if
any?
  • Gives us a feel for their activity level
  • Can relate it to BMI
  • Students who had jobs had a lower BMI on
average than those who did not work.

9
Question 4 How many combined hours of physical
activity do you participate in each week?
  • Are higher activity levels associated with a
    lower BMI?
  • The answer is
  • NOT NECESSARILY

10
Question 5 What chronic medical conditions do
you have, if any?
  • Do those who have chronic medical conditions
    have higher average BMIs?
  • According to our sample, not necessarily
  • Fewer medical conditions were associated with
    higher BMI.

11
Question 6 What chronic medical conditions do
your biological parents have, if any?
  • Do those whose parents have chronic medical
    conditions, have a higher BMI?
  • The more medical conditions a students parents
have the more likely the student is to be
    overweight.
  • This trend does not follow in regards to obesity.

12
Trends and Conclusions
  • Our sample population did not always follow the
    national data.
  • The BMI of our students did not seem to have any
correlation to the hours of activity they engaged
    in on a regular basis.
  • Most students who are overweight had no medical
    conditions or only one condition.

Thank You. The End.
