2If we spoke to each of the authors how would
they respond to the 10 Mistakes?
Would they refute the evidence?
Would they advise us to give it up?
Would their comments reflect amusement?
Would they intend to explain the mistakes?
Would they show surprise?
Is it possible that all the information could be
brought together and still make perfect sense?

4Mistake 1 The Chicken Little SyndromePeople
jump to all sorts of catastrophic conclusions
without giving the situation a second thought.
Hunter
Covey
Osteen
- Raising your level of Expectancy
- Living Favor Minded
- Reprogramming Your Mental Computer
- Defeating Disappointments
- The Seed Must Lead
- Being a Person of Excellence and Integrity
This mistake is grounded in knee-jerk reactions
to sudden adversity. Servant Leadership focuses
upon the authority of the leader, authority based
upon trust and positive regard, serving as a
steadying force to the sudden misfortunes or
problems that always happen.
In between stimulus and response lies a gap. In
this gap, we make the decision to react
negatively or positively. This is a
non-judgmental fact, and we all choose to react
in different ways.
5Mistake 2 Mind ReadingThinking we can read
others minds and expecting them to read ours.
Hunter
Covey
Osteen
- Enlarging Your Vision
- Who Do You Think You Are?
- Becoming What You Believe
- Happiness Is a Choice
Seek first to understand, and then seek to be
understood. Gain insight into peoples true
feelings by showing genuine concern.
The leader develops a healthy, collaborative
relationship with subordinates in a way that
mind reading is occurring, with all of its
attendant inaccuracies, the leader gets to know
subordinates in a positive and close personal
way. The leader knows the subordinates well
enough not to assume the worst in what they say
or do.
6Mistake 3 PersonalizingTaking everything
personally is a common mistake. Its not all
about you.
Hunter
Covey
Osteen
- Part One is about Enlarging Your Vision
- There are Six Chapters that talk of the Vision,
Expectancy, and Living the Favor Minded
The leader, in reshaping the basic paradigm of
leadership from that of a manager to that of a
willing servant abandons the ego. The leaders
focus is now shifted from the self to meeting the
needs of others, primarily those of subordinates.
With this shift, personalizing is less likely to
occur.
People create meanings and act on the basis of
how they see the world. The same facts may be
interpreted entirely differently since personal
meaning is determined based on personal
experience. Question your personal paradigms and
experiences before reacting. Try not to empower
your ego.
7Mistake 4 Believing Your Press AgentPeople
believe that success in one area automatically
translates to success in every area. (A False
Sense of Security)
Hunter
Covey
Osteen
This mistake is one of information and
perceptions filtered through the viewpoint of
others. Each member of the organization has a
stake in the success or failure of the whole
communication and honesty serve as premiums in
Servant Leadership. These outweigh doubts.
Success is principle-based, and acting within
true north principles is what determines
success and excellence in all of lifes
endeavors.
- Discover the Power of your Thought and Words
- Choosing the Right Thoughts
- Reprogramming Your Mental Computer
- Power in Your Words
- Speaking Life Changing Words
- Speaking of Blessing
8Mistake 5 Believing (or inventing) Your
CriticsTaking all criticism to heart without
questioning the qualifications of critics can be
crippling.
Hunter
Covey
Osteen
- Part Two is Develop a Healthy Self-Image
- Who Do You Think You Are?
- Understanding Your Value
- Becoming What You Believe
- Developing a Prosperous Mind-Set
- Be Happy with Who You Are
Servant Leadership leaves no room for personal
agendas the leaders sense of self, or ego is
replaced by the genuine desire to serve the whole.
Once again seek first to understand, then to be
understood. Understand the source of the
criticism before attempting to make your voice be
heard.
9Mistake 6 PerfectionismThis is the desire to
be perfect in all things. Perfectionism becomes
dumb when the standards you set are so high no
one can meet them. The desire to be 100 percent
may lead to zero accomplishment.
Hunter
Covey
Osteen
- Part Four Letting Go Of The Past
- Letting Go of Emotional Wounds
- Dont Let Bitterness Take Root
- Let God Bring Justice into Your Life
- Defeating Disappointments
Perfectionism is a form of an overreaching desire
for control servant leadership empowers all
members of the organization therefore no one
manipulates or holds up progress to meet
impossible standards.
Covey believes that idealism is realism.
Perfectionism can shift the focus away from
whats wildly important, thereby allowing the
high achievers to be more productive and
successful.
10Mistake 7 What-If ThinkingExcessive worry
diminishes your power to deal with situations.
Hunter
Covey
Osteen
- Part 5 Find Strength Through Adversity
- Getting UP On the Inside
- Trusting Gods Timing
- The Purpose of Trials
- Trusting God When Life Doesnt Make Sense
Servant Leadership focuses on self-control,
giving attention, appreciation and encouragement,
displaying authentic positive regard without
pretense of arrogance, treating others with
importance, meeting the needs of others, giving
up resentment, being free of deception, sticking
to choices, and setting aside the personal wants
to seek to meet the needs of others.
Focus on whats wildly important. Were wired
to focus on only one thing at a time with
excellence. Multi-tasking including worrying
about things outside of our circle of concern
diminishes our potential for excellence.
11Mistake 8 ComparisonitisChecking yourself
against others and focusing only on negative
comparisons can be very discouraging and it is
usually inaccurate.
Hunter
Covey
Osteen
- Part 7 Choosing To Be Happy
- Happiness is a Choice
- Being a Person of Integrity and Excellence
- Living with Enthusiasm
Servant Leadership promotes the abandonment of
the self- ego and replacing it with a desire to
serve and meet the needs of the entire group
rather than seeking to meet the individual needs
and therefore make comparisons.
A person driven by his/her conscience has the
abundance mentality the mentality that theres
plenty of opportunity for success for everyone.
A person driven by ego is threatened by negative
feedback and interprets everything in terms of
self-preservation.
12Mistake 9 The Imperative ShouldShould users
are so focused on what they should do or should
have done in the past that they cannot think
about what they can do, what they might do in the
future.
Hunter
Covey
Osteen
This is another self-delusion based on the belief
that one is always in control of persons and
situations. Humility being without pretense
and arrogance - is another tenet of the Servant
Leadership. It frees the individual from
self-chastising because they did not make the
right decision.
- Part Four Letting Go Of The Past
- Letting Go of Emotional Wounds
- Dont Let Bitterness Take Root
- Let God Bring Justice into Your Life
- Defeating Disappointments
Memory relates to the past. It is finite.
Vision is future it is infinite. Vision is
greater than history, baggage, and the emotional
scars of the past. Therefore, attain a vision
you have the conscience, discipline and passion
to follow through with.
13Mistake 10 Yes-ButismThe yes-but person
manages to find negatives that outweigh any
positives. Yes-but people get in their own and
others- way.
Hunter
Covey
Osteen
- Live To Give
- Joy of Giving
- Showing Gods Kindness and Mercy
- Keep Your Heart of Compassion Open
- The Seed Must Lead
- Sowing and Growing
The authority the Servant Leader inspires or
evokes among those that they lead by their
positive regard, self-sacrifice and meeting the
needs of others leaves little room for doubt. It
is doubt that is at the root of yes-but In
place of self-doubt, there is confidence and hope.
Organizations that are rooted in true north
principles will promote positive responses to
negative stimuli. Valuing these true-north
principles will elicit positive behavior and
better decision making.
