1
Establishment of Zion
  • Servant of the Lord Jesus Christ

2
First, Its Important to Note
  • For unto whomsoever much is given, of him
shall much be required and to whom the Lord has
committed much, of him will men ask the more.
  • Luke 1257
  • for unto whom much is given, much is required
and he who sins against the greater light shall
    receive the greater condemnation.
  • DC 811c
  • This is talking about understanding of the Gospel
and establishment of Zion, the Kingdom of God,
    on earth

3
The key is the vision of Zion
  • "Where there is no vision, the people perish but
he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
  • Proverbs 2918

4
  • Zionwhat, why, how

5
What is Zion?
  • And it came to pass in the thirty and sixth
year, the people were all converted unto the
Lord, upon all the face of the land, both
    Nephites and Lamanites, and
  • there were no contentions and disputations among
    them, and
  • every man did deal justly one with another
  • And they had all things common among them,
therefore they were not rich and poor, bond and
    free, but
  • they were all made free, and
  • partakers of the heavenly gift.
  • IV Nephi 13-4

6
And also
  • Therefore verily thus saith the Lord, Let Zion
rejoice, for this is Zion, THE PURE IN HEART
    therefore let Zion rejoice
  • DC 945c

7
Where did the name come from?
  • And the Lord called his people, Zion, because
  • they were of one heart and of one mind, and
  • dwelt in righteousness and
  • there were no poor among them.
  • Genesis 723 DC 362hi

8
Conversely the Lord said,
  • I say unto you, Be one and if ye are not one,
    ye are not mine.
  • DC 386a

9
Whose kingdom is it?
  • And the Lord said, Blessed is he through whose
seed Messiah shall come for he saith, I am
Messiah, the King of Zion, the Rock of heaven,
which is broad as eternity and whoso cometh in
at the gate, and climbeth up by me shall never
    fall.
  • Genesis 759 or DC 3610gh Psalms 1492

10
When has Zion existed on the earth?
  • Enochs City (Genesis 720-25)
  • Salem (Psalms 762)
  • Golden Years (approximately 100 years) in BOM
land after Christ came (IV Nephi 13-4,6)
  • Certain times during Old Testament
  • Adam, Abraham, Moses at Mount Horeb
  • Early Church (Acts 238-47, 432-37, 514-16)

11
Will Zion exist again?
  • righteousness and truth will I cause to sweep
the earth as with a flood, to gather out mine own
elect from the four quarters of the earth unto a
place which I shall prepare a holy city, that my
people may gird up their loins, and be looking
forth to the time of my coming for there shall
be my tabernacle, and it shall be called Zion, a
    New Jerusalem.
  • Genesis 770 DC 3612fg

12
Why will Zion exist again?
  • wherefore the decree hath gone forth from the
Father that they shall be gathered in unto one
place, upon the face of this land, to prepare
their hearts, and be prepared in all things,
against the day when tribulation and desolation
are sent forth upon the wicked
  • DC 282d

13
Zion will be our Salvation
  • Watch, therefore, for ye know neither the day
nor the hour. Let them, therefore, who are
among the Gentiles, flee unto Zion.
  • DC 1084
  • And then shall they assist my people that they
may be gathered in, who are scattered upon all
the face of the land, in unto the New Jerusalem.
  • III Nephi 103

14
Again, Zion will be our Salvation
  • And that a New Jerusalem should be built up upon
this land, unto the remnant of the seed of
Joseph, for which things there has been a type
for as Joseph brought his father down into the
land of Egypt, even so he died there Wherefore
the Lord brought a remnant of the seed of Joseph
out of the land of Jerusalem, that he might be
merciful unto the seed of Joseph, that they
should perish not, even as he was merciful unto
the father of Joseph, that he should perish not
Wherefore the remnant of the house of Joseph
shall be built up upon this land and it shall be
a land of their inheritance and they shall build
up a holy city unto the Lord, like unto the
Jerusalem of old and they shall no more be
confounded, until the end come, when the earth
    shall pass away.
  • Ether 66-8

Zion will also be
  • Remember this which I tell you before, that you
may lay it to heart, and receive that which shall
follow. Behold, verily I say unto you, For this
cause I have sent you that you might be obedient,
and that your hearts might be prepared to bear
testimony of the things which are to come and
also that you might be honored of laying the
foundation, and of bearing record of the land
upon which the Zion of God shall stand and also
that a feast of fat things might be prepared for
the poor yea, a feast of fat things, of wine on
the lees well refined, that the earth may know
that the mouths of the prophets shall not fail
yea, a supper of the house of the Lord, well
prepared, unto which all nations shall be
    invited.
  • Firstly, the rich and the learned, the wise and
    the noble and
  • after that cometh the day of my power
  • then shall the poor, the lame, and the blind, and
the deaf, come in unto the marriage of the Lamb,
and partake of the supper of the Lord, prepared
for the great day to come.
  • Behold, I, the Lord, have spoken it. And that
the testimony might go forth from Zion yea, from
the mouth of the city of the heritage of God
yea, for this cause I have sent you hither, and
have selected my servant Edward Partridge, and
have appointed unto him his mission in this land
  • DC 583-4a (Look Up the Parable of the Wedding
    Feast)

17
Continued
  • And, behold, this is not yet, but by and by
wherefore seeing that I, the Lord, have decreed
all these things upon the face of the earth, I
will that my saints should be assembled upon the
land of Zion and that every man should take
righteousness in his hands, and faithfulness upon
his loins, and lift a warning voice unto the
inhabitants of the earth and declare both by
word and by flight, that desolation shall come
    upon the wicked.

David sought Zion
  • Zion in Davids Time (II Samuel 53-12)
  • 3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king
to Hebron and king David made a league with them
in Hebron before the Lord and they anointed
David king over Israel.4 David was thirty years
old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty
years.5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven
years and six months and in Jerusalem he reigned
thirty and three years over all Israel and
Judah.6 And the king and his men went to
Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of
the land which spake unto David, saying, Except
thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt
not come in hither thinking, David cannot come
in hither.7 Nevertheless, David took the
stronghold of Zion the same is the city of
David.8 And David said on that day, Whosoever
getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the
Jebusites, and the lame and the blind, that are
hated of David's soul, he shall be chief and
captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the
lame shall not come into the house.9 So David
dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of
David. And David built round about from Millo and
inward.10 And David went on, and grew great, and
the Lord God of hosts was with him.11 And Hiram
king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar
trees, and carpenters, and masons and they built
David a house.12 And David perceived that the
Lord had established him king over Israel, and
that he had exalted his kingdom for his people
    Israel's sake.
  • Ark of the Covenant moved to Jerusalem (I Kings
    81)
  • Then Solomon assembled the elders of Israel, and
all the heads of the tribes, the chief of the
fathers of the children of Israel, unto king
Solomon in Jerusalem, that they might bring up
the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of the
city of David, which is Zion.

A Historians understanding of Zion
  • http//www.crystalinks.com/mountzion.html
  • The name Zion was originally used for the
mountain on which Jerusalem was built.
  • The name first appears in the story of David's
capture of Jerusalem, which was called the
    stronghold of Zion.
  • Later the name was also used for the part of the
slope on which the temple was situated.
  • Zion was supposedly the dwelling place of God.
  • Mount Zion is the highest point in the city of
    Jerusalem.
  • For more than a thousand years, Jewish tradition
has identified Mount Zion as being the last
resting place of King David and his descendants
  • Mount Zion is the site of the Last Supper and the
place where the supposedly Virgin Mary died.

    brought forth her children.

Other books of Antiquity contd
  • Septuagint (LXX, seventy in Roman numerals)
  • 300BC, a large Jewish community sprung up in
Alexandria and many other Greek cities around the
Mediterranean Sea. There was a great library in
Alexandria and the Pharaoh, one Ptolemy II,
ordered that it should contain a copy of the
Hebrew Scriptures translated into Greek. The
finest Jewish scholars ordered to assemble in
Alexandria to undertake the great work of
translation. Seventy two scribes, six from each
of the twelve tribes, each produced a Greek copy
of the Pentateuch absolutely identical to all the
others. This was seen as a sign that the new
translation was divinely inspired and it became
widely accepted by Greek speaking Jews as an
    acceptable (and understandable) substitute for
    the Hebrew original.
  • Known as Greek Old Testament
  • (from Josephus)

45
Other books of Antiquity contd
  • The truth is that well before the birth of
Christ, the Septuagint was being used by the Jews
of the Diaspora and was familiar even to those
still in Palestine. This meant that the main
focus of Jewish intellectual life switched from
Hebrew into Greek - the lingua franca of the
Mediterranean - and additions to the scriptures
made after about 300BC were usually in that
    language.
  • It is these additions that now make up the OT
Apocrypha and most of them were never written in
    Hebrew.

  • Key distinction in the Inspired Version of the
Bible is Enochs City. What do other versions
    say about Enoch?

49
Enoch in King James Bible OT
  • Jared lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and
begot Enoch. After he begot Enoch, Jared lived
eight hundred years, and had sons and daughters.
So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and
sixty-two years and he died. Enoch lived
sixty-five years, and begot Methuselah. After he
begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God three
hundred years, and had sons and daughters. So all
the days of Enoch were three hundred and
sixty-five years. And Enoch walked with God and
he was not, for God took him.
  • Genesis 518-24

50
Enoch in King James Bible NT
  • By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not
see death, "and was not found, because God had
taken him" for before he was taken he had this
    testimony, that he pleased God.
  • Hebrews 115
  • Now Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied
about these men also, saying, "Behold, the Lord
comes with ten thousands of His saints, to
execute judgment on all, to convict all who are
ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds
which they have committed in an ungodly way, and
of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners
    have spoken against Him.

  • How did they come to understand the vision of
Zion from the Restoration of the fullness of the
    gospel?

52
Latter Day Development of the Vision of Zion
  • September 23, 1827
  • Joseph Smith, Jr. received the golden plates,
from which the Book of Mormorn (BOM) was
    translated, from the angel Moroni
  • April 5, 1829 (DC 6)
  • DC 63a first stated to establish the cause of
Zion other scriptures followed with similar
direction, see DC 103a, DC 113b, DC 123a, DC
    192d,
  • March 26, 1830
  • BOM first advertised for sale. The BOM contained
information about a New Jerusalem, but with just
this information, plus considering the amount of
new information, my guess is that they did not
have much understanding about Zion yet.
  • April 6, 1830

53
Latter Day Development of the Vision of Zion
  • June 1830
  • Joseph Smith commenced with the revision of the
Bible to create our Inspired Version of the
Bible. Enoch City expands our understanding of
    Zion.
  • July 1830 (DC 23)
  • DC 234a This revelation is given due to the
persecution that Joseph and Oliver received
because of the BOM. Joseph Smith is told, For
thou shalt devote all thy service in Zion. And in
    this thou shalt have strength.
  • August 1830 (DC 28)
  • DC 282d states that the chosen shall be gathered
in unto one place to prepare against the day that
tribulation and desolation are sent forth upon
the wicked. It does not, however, call this
    place Zion.

54
Latter Day Development of the Vision of Zion
  • December 1830 (DC 34)
  • Revelation given to Sidney Rigdon which clarifies
that Zion will be a physical entity. DC 346a,
Keep all the commandments and covenants by which
ye are bound, and I will cause the heavens to
shake for your good, and Satan shall tremble, and
Zion shall rejoice upon the hills, and flourish
and Israel shall be saved in mine own due time.
  • December 1830 (DC 36)
  • A revelation was given on the prophecy of Enoch
which is now DC 36 and Genesis 71-78. This was
a major step in our understanding of Zion for it
clarified the power that God would give His
servants, the degree of righteousness that was
required, and the great reward that could be
obtained to dwell with God. Additionally, it
substantiated that this standard of living was
possible with the Spirit of God dwelling in man.

55
Latter Day Development of the Vision of Zion
  • Early January 1831 (DC 38)
  • Lord says that he deigns to give greater riches,
even a land of promise, a land flowing with milk
and honey, upon which there shall be no curse
when the Lord cometh if we seek it with all our
hearts. This shall be the Lords covenant with
us that we shall have it for the land of our
inheritance while the earth shall stand and we
shall possess it again in eternity, no more to
    pass away.
  • January 1831 (DC 39)
  • Revelation given to James Covill, a Baptist
minister, who sought light concerning his
relation to the Restoration movement, but it
applies to all. It clearly states that the
church is to again bring forth a physical Zion
for DC 394b says, Thou art called to labor in
my vineyard, and to build up my church, and to
bring forth Zion, that it may rejoice upon the
    hills and flourish.

56
Latter Day Development of the Vision of Zion
  • February 1831
  • Joseph Emma arrived in Kirtland, Ohio via sled.
  • February 9, 1831 (DC 42 43)
  • DC 42 a revelation given in the presence of
twelve elders which was viewed as the Laws of the
Church. It included direction (DC 4210bc) to
have a storehouse to administer to the poor and
needy, to purchase lands, build houses of
worship, and to build up the New Jerusalem.
Notice, this is the first tie in with the BOM by
    using this terminology for Zion.
  • Also worth noting is that they now understood
clearly that Jesus Christ would come to the
temple that they were to build in Zion.
  • Additionally, in February 1831 given in DC 437b
it states, for in my own due time will I come
upon the earth in judgment and my people shall
be redeemed and shall reign with me on earth.
This was a distinct theological shift that their
heaven was not somewhere else, but on earth.
Recall that before this their understanding was
that Enochs city was taken to be with God.

57
Latter Day Development of the Vision of Zion
  • March 7, 1831 (DC 45)
  • The Saints were experiencing much hardship, due
to the persecution and the large amount of poor
gathering quickly at Kirtland. With this in mind
DC 45 was received that promised hope in the
vision of Zion. Specifically it promised,
  • in v. 12 that the terror of the Lord would be in
Zion and that the wicked would not come upon it
  • in v. 13 that those who would not take up sword
against his neighbor must flee to Zion for
    safety and
  • in v. 14 that the righteous should be gathered
out from all nations to come to Zion singing with
    songs of everlasting joy.
  • March 1831 (DC 49)
  • Later this same month in DC 495 the promise was
given that Zion shall flourish and that gathering
should take place where the Lord appoints.

58
Latter Day Development of the Vision of Zion
  • Early June 1831 (DC 52)
  • God first designated the location for Zion. DC
522e, if ye are faithful, ye shall assemble
yourselves together to rejoice upon the land of
Missouri, which is the land of your inheritance,
which is now the land of your enemies.
  • June 1831 (DC 54)
  • The people first directed to go to the location
of Zion. DC 542, Wherefore, go to now and flee
the land, lest your enemies come upon you and
take your journey, and appoint whom you will to
be your leader, and to pay moneys for you. And
thus you shall take your journey into the regions
westward, and unto the land of Missouri, unto the
borders of the Lamanites. And after you have done
journeying, behold, I say unto you, Seek ye a
living like unto men, until I prepare a place for
    you.

59
Latter Day Development of the Vision of Zion
  • July 1831 (DC 57)
  • First revelation given in the land of Zion, given
to those elders who were faithful in going to
this land as directed. Their efforts were
validated with further clarification of where the
temple should be built, for DC 571 says,
Hearken, O ye elders of my church saith the Lord
your God, who have assembled yourselves together,
according to my commandments, in this land which
is the land of Missouri, which is the land which
I have appointed and consecrated for the
gathering of the Saints wherefore this is the
land of promise, and the place for the city of
Zion. And thus saith the Lord your God, If you
will receive wisdom here is wisdom. Behold, the
place which is now called Independence, is the
Center Place, and the spot for the temple is
lying westward upon a lot which is not far from
the courthouse wherefore it is wisdom that the
land should be purchased by the Saints and also
every tract lying westward, even unto the line
running directly between Jew and Gentile. And
also every tract bordering by the prairies,
inasmuch as my disciples are enabled to buy
lands. Behold, this is wisdom, that they may
obtain it for an everlasting inheritance.
  • Additionally, in this revelation they are
directed to establish a storehouse and a house
    for printing.

Latter Day Development of the Vision of Zion
  • August 1, 1831 (DC 58)
  • First week in Zion, four revelations given and
many events occurred including the dedication of
the temple and the first conference held in the
land of Zion. As more Saints arrive in
Independence DC 58 given to further direct them.
  • specifically they are told in v. 4 that Gods law
shall be kept on this land
  • in v.10c to purchase the whole region round about
  • in v. 13a to consecrate and dedicate this land
and the spot for the temple unto the Lord

    Zion)
  • Verse 5, Now it is called to-day (until the
coming of the Son of Man), and verily it is a day
of sacrifice, and a day for the tithing of my
people for he that is tithed shall not be burned
(at his coming) for after to-day cometh the
burning Tomorrow all the proud and they that do
wickedly shall be as stubble and I will burn
them up, for I am the Lord of hosts and I will
not spare any that remaineth in Babylon.
  • Verse 6bc, He Lord hath set you to provide for
his Saints in these last days, that they may

  • Verse 7c, Behold, I, the Lord, have made my

  • Verse 8ab, Zion shall flourish, and the glory of

shall tremble because of her, and shall fear

  • Ben-Tziyon From the Hebrew, meaning excellence
    or son of Zion.
  • Zion or Tzion (???? "Height", Standard Hebrew
?iyyon, Tiberian Hebrew ?iyy?bgt Arabic ?????
?uhyun) originally was the specific name given to
a Jebusite fortress near modern-day Jerusalem
that was conquered by David. The original
fortress was located on the hill in southeastern
    Jerusalem, called Mount Zion.
  • Zion, or Sion, is an archaic term that originally
referred to a section of Jerusalem, which, by
Biblical definition, is the City of David. After
the death of King David, the term Zion came to
refer to the hill in Jerusalem which was the site
of Solomon's temple. Later, Zion came to refer to
temple and the temple grounds themselves. Beyond
that, Zion is used to symbolize Jerusalem and the
Promised Land of God to come, in which God dwells
    among his chosen people.

the ordinances thereof, and the authority of the

no man can see the face of God, even the Father,
