Title: Old Media vs New Media

1
A presentation on the effects of old and new
media forms within a classroom setting.
2
The Conflict
  • As technology continues to improve we find
ourselves continually adapting to new ways to
    learn
  • Taking notes with ball pens is a lot different
than doing so with an iPad
  • So which way is more beneficial?

3
Types of Old Media
  • Notebooks, Post it Notes, Textbooks, Chalkboards,
and even Dry Erase boards these days
  • Are we heading away from these traditional forms
    of learning?
  • What are we losing from this?

4
Why use Old Media?
  • Hard Copy When writing on tangible items you
never run the risk of deleting it and losing all
    your information
  • More likely to focus There are less distraction
allowing students to focus at the topic at hand
  • Freedom to format There are no restrictions to
how the placement of your documentations are
    written down

5
Types of New Media
  • IPads, Laptops, Smartphones, Internet, and
    Kindles
  • Are we becoming too comfortable with these new
    devices?
  • Is this the direction the future should take?

6
What's the big deal about New Media?
  • Multitasking With tablets, its easy have many
different windows open at once to get more done
  • Better Spacing Small devices create less clutter
    on a desk
  • Accessible Resources Can help develop
conversation on a topic by looking up information
    during class
  • New Ways To Learn With new media, YouTube,
blogs, and social media have all been introduced
to the classroom which can be viewed on a
    projector

7
Cons of Old Media
  • Clutter Can become very unorganized and take up
    space on the desk
  • Outdated As we move into a digital generation,
old media can seem old fashion and unappealing

8
Cons of New Media
  • Distraction While it may be good to have the
internet at your tablets disposal, it may very
well take your mind of the subject at hand
  • Less efficient with time With all that
multitasking you are doing you become less
    efficient with doing one job
  • Believe everything is a quick fix Since there is
nothing difficult about searching a topic in
Google, people may forget we once had to actually
    research information in the library

9
Should we be concerned?
  • With many schools trying to try new technology in
the classroom, newer generations will grow up
    never experience old media
  • Will newer generation miss out on skills that
    only old media could developed?
  • Skills such as handwriting, sustainable memory,
    and concentration

10
No we shouldnt be concerned!
  • If we looked through history we will see that
there has always been speculation about the
newest technology and how people will adapt to it
  • New media may have new options to learn, but the
    process is the same
  • Imagine the first time someone brought a
    calculator in the classroom

11
Outcomes
  • Yes, the newer generations will may decrease in
skill levels that old media helped developed if
    everyone goes strictly new media
  • On the other hand, people will gain new skills to
strive in the new unknown world that new media is
    creating
  • Change will always happen, it is important to be
    able to adapt

12
Conclusion
  • When it comes to old media vs. new media there
should be a balance of both
  • As we can see both provide things that the other
    may struggle in
  • It becomes important to understand which media is
best for certain situations and apply them
    appropriately
  • Dont be scared of the future, understand what's
going on and take hold of it!
