  • Here is some good news for parents and carers
    who want to support their childs learning in
    mathematics. If you are stuck for ideas or not
    sure how to explain strategies, then this website
    will prove to be helpful.
  • I have listed a number of useful activities that
    can be carried out at home and are not too time
    consuming. I hope you find them useful. If you
    have any other ideas, please do not hesitate and
    e-mail them to me.

ltltback Counting
  • Count a collection of objects, buttons, shells,
    pasta shells. (Or, as an extension estimate
    first and then count to check!).
  • Cars on a journey, e.g. How many blue cars can
    you see?
  • Count how many step to bed.
  • Stepping stones in the garden.
  • Look at house numbers, emphasising odd and even
    numbers.
  • How many pages in a story.
  • Count in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s.
  • (REMEMBER NUMBERS ARE ALL AROUND US!!!)

  • Look at prices.
  • Decide on which coins to pay for items.
  • Weigh fruit and vegetables in the supermarket.
  • Encourage children to count pocket money.
  • Read labels on bottles, packets, in order to
    discuss capacity and weight.
  • Calculate change.
  • Write and sort out shopping lists.
  • Rubbing of different coins and talk about size
    and colour of coins.
  • Calculating the cost of the family going to the
    cinema, swimming baths etc

  • Sequence main events of the day, e.g. breakfast,
    lunch and dinner.
  • What comes next games.
  • Set of instructions, for example a recipe.
  • Days of the week, months of the year.
  • Number patterns.

  • Calculate heights of family members. Who is the
    tallest? Who is the shortest?
  • Measure how many grams of ingredients you will
    need to bake a cake?
  • Playing with plastic jugs and containers in the
    bath. Are they full, half full or empty?
  • Calculate areas, e.g. How many squares on the
    patio, tiles in the shower.
  • Comparing shoe size within the family.
  • Weighing different toys to find the heaviest,
    lightest, or two the same.
  • Reading labels to see how many grams or
    kilograms.
  • Looking at bottles or cans to identify and
    recognise millilitres and litres.

  • Telling the time.
  • Calculating how long a journey will take. Look
    at bus/train/airline timetables.
  • Looking at a calendar-days, weeks, months

  • Setting the table - 1 to 1 correspondence and
    sorting cutlery.
  • Sorting buttons, beads, colours of pegs, sweets,
    biscuits, seeds for the garden and so on..
  • Sorting clothes for washing- size and colour.
  • Matching pairs of socks, gloves, shoes..
  • Sorting groceries.

  • Using car number plates - add the digits to find
    biggest, smallest and totals.
  • Sharing out sweets, in groups of 2,3,4,5,6 to
    help with times tables.
  • Looking for numbers- in shops, on buses, doors,
    cars
  • Using sandwiches to show fractions ½ , ¼
  • Pressing the digits on the telephone to make a
    call with an adult.
