CARGO TANK MOTOR VEHICLES
2
DOT Definition
  • A tank intended primarily for the carriage of
    liquids or gases
  • A tank that is permanently attached to or forms
any part of any motor vehicle
  • Is loaded of unloaded without being removed from
    a motor vehicle
  • Is not fabricated under a specification for
cylinders, portable tanks, tank cars, or
    multiunit tank car

3
MC vs. DOT
  • MC 306 Certified before August 31, 1995 and will
    have spec. plate
  • DOT 406 Certified on August 31, 1995 or later
    will have certification plate

4
Specification Plate and Certification Plates
  • Helps with the identification of tank type by
    providing specific information.
  • Spec. Plates located on passenger side front of
    tank.
  • Certification Plates located on drivers side
    front of tank.

  • MC-306/DOT-406Red
  • MC-307/DOT407Green
  • MC-312/DOT-412Yellow
  • Non-specification cargo tankBlue
  • Identifies the specification under which the
    cargo tank is operated
  • Common multipurpose configurations are
  • MC-306/DOT-406 / MC-307/DOT-407
  • MC-307/DOT-407/MC-312/DOT-412 (Nalco uses this)

7
MC-306/DOT-406
  • Most oval cross section
  • Non pressurized - less than 3 psi (406 -5 psig)
  • Usually single shell aluminum construction
  • Some older tanks may be constructed of steel

12
MC-307/DOT-407
  • Circular cross section
  • Low pressure (up to 40 psi)
  • Double shell construction with insulation is most
    common
  • Some insulated tanks may not appear circular

13
MC-307/DOT-407
  • Usually one to two compartments
