2History Beans Bread Center
- 1977 Opened in the Fells Point neighborhood of
Baltimore City - 1986 SVDP was asked to take over the B B
operation - 1992 BB moves the program to 402-404 S. Bond
St. to offer services beyond a meal - 1997 SVDP expanded the Beans Bread Center
facility by adding additional day program space
and 20 units of transitional housing - 2006 Beans Bread Center began placing its
disabled homeless clients in scattered-site
permanent supportive housing through its Home
Connections program.

- Project Goal
- To improve the Beans and Bread Center facility in
order to better serve existing clientele and
enable them to achieve greater stability,
self-sufficiency, permanent housing, and an
improved quality of life.

- To better accommodate our existing clients
seeking services from the day resource program
by - Adding indoor space to move the meal line queue
inside - Creating a large daytime resource area and
waiting room - Extending current supportive services to more of
our meal service clients - Offering restricted shower and laundry services
to clients actively engaged in case management
services - Improving access for people with disabilities
- Providing adequate and appropriate office space
for existing staff and visiting partner agencies.

11Facility Improvements Space Utilization
- 2.5 increase in day room (30 to 80 person
capacity), add in-door queue space, mail station,
resource center, 2 group meeting rooms, 3
showers (4 total), 3 laundry centers. - New copy room, volunteer break room, increase
offices from 12 to16 reduce cubicles from 8 to 5
(total workstations 21 versus 20) - Facility New elevator make handicap

Center (Current Proposed)
With the facility addition, the day resource area
and services will be able to serve twice as many
of the existing meal program guests a day, taking
it from 75 to 150 individuals a day. This equates
to a change from serving 23,000 to 46,000
participants in the day resource area annually.
These figures do not represent an increase in the
total number of people served daily, which has
remained fairly constant over the past 16 years
at approx. 300 per day.

- No. It is a renovation of existing space an
addition of new space to better serve existing
clients. The dining room will remain the same
size. - No. Surveys show that the vast majority of
clients of Beans and Bread come from the
immediate and surrounding communities. The
clients of Beans and Bread walk to the center - No. A major objective of the facility renovation
and addition project is to add substantial indoor
space that will move the meal line queue inside
and create a large daytime resource area and
waiting room

clients to the center? - Is Beans and Bread Center going to become an
emergency shelter? - Hasnt Beans Bread increased the number served
each year?
- No. Showers (4) and laundry (3) units will be
restricted and only made available to clients
actively engaged in case management. - No. Beans and Bread is not an emergency shelter
but, rather, a day resource center, and will
remain so after the renovation project is
complete. - No. The average number served for a daily meal
over the last 16 years has remained relatively
constant increasing only by 38 people per day
during this 16 year period.
