  • Passages from Matthew

2
What Does Jesus Say?
  • Jesus does not give us many images of what heaven
    itself will be like.
  • His description is of the kingdom of heaven, not
    the place of heaven.

3
Passages in Matthew
  • 417 he preached repent, for the kingdom of
    heaven is near.
  • It is for the poor in Spirit (53) and those who
are persecuted because of righteousness (510).
  • It is only for those who have a righteousness
which passes the Pharisees and teachers of the
    law (520).

4
Passages in Matthew
  • It is a kingdom which was to come and where Gods
will is done on earth as it is in heaven (610).
  • If you seek it first and His righteousness you
will have what you need (633)
  • Not everyone who says Lord, Lord will enter
    (721) but only those who do the will of God.
  • The disciples were told to preach that it was
    near (107)

5
Matthew Passages
  • 1112 From the days of John the Baptist until
now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully
advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it.
  • Cf. Luke 1721 the kingdom of God is within
    you.
  • Most of the Kingdom parables in Matthew 13 are
about it being like a seed in a field.
  • It is also compared to yeast, a hidden treasure,
a fine pearl, and a net from which all will be
    sorted.

6
Matthew Passages
  • Peter is told that he will be given the keys of
    the kingdom (1619).
  • Some who were alive in 1628 were told that they
would see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.
  • 1914 tells us that the kingdom belongs to such
as the children that Jesus was with.
  • 1923 reminds us that it is hard for a rich man
    to enter the kingdom.
  • 201-16 reminds us that God will give all the
same wages no matter when we enter.

7
Matthew Passages
  • 2534 says that the faithful will inherit the
kingdom prepared since the creation of the world.
  • At the last supper Jesus said that he would drink
the cup anew in His Fathers kingdom.

8
John Passages
  • Matthew has over 50 passages about the kingdom
    and John has 3.
  • John 33-5 John says twice that being born again
is necessary to see and enter the kingdom.

worldmy kingdom is from another place.

About Kingdom
  • The word kingdom is capable of three different
    meanings
  • (1) the realm over which a monarch reigns,
  • (2) the people over whom he or she reigns, and
  • (3) the actual reign or rule itself. In Greek and
Hebrew, this is the primary meaning.

10
A state of is, but not yet.
  • The kingdom of God has come into history in the
person of Christ to break the power of death and
Satan and it will come in power and glory with
the return of Christ to complete the destruction
    of these enemies.

11
Kingdom Definition
  • The sovereign rule of God manifested in Christ
to defeat his enemies, creating a people over
whom he reigns and issuing in a time and place in
which the power of his reign is experienced
    completely and eternally.

12
Two Kingdoms at Once
  • Because we are in the is, but not yet time of
the full reign of God we experience two kingdoms
occurring in the same place and time.
  • We are in the time of the kingdom of heaven and
    the kingdom of darkness.
