Sound
  • One way to grab the readers attention is to
    start with sound.
  • Another name for sound is onomatopoeia.
  • Some examples are Boom, Pow, Sshhh, knock knock,
    meow, roar etc..
  • Try some!

IMAGE
  • What is image?
  • Image is when we describe a person, place or
    thing using our senses.
  • A good writer sometimes starts with the image.
  • For exampleAs I peered out my window, the sky
was painted with strokes of pink and gold. The
birds were chirping and the smell of fresh cut
    grass welcomed spring.

4
DIALOGUE
  • A good writer captures the readers attention
    with dialogue.
  • Conversation is dialogue.
  • Mom, are we there yet? I asked eagerly, is an
    example of dialogue.
  • Remember to separate what is been said with who
says it with a comma and quotation marks.

5
FACT
  • Starting with a startling fact, is another way
    to hook the reader.
  • Facts are things you can prove. (numbers, dates
    etc)
  • Usually if you start the fact with Did you know
is a great way to reveal the fact.
  • Did you know that John McCain picked Sarah Palin
    as his Vice president?
  • Did you know Barak Obama
  • picked Joe Biden as his
  • running mate?

6
QUESTION
  • A QUESTION IS ONE WAY TO HOOK THE READER.
  • WHEN YOU BEGIN WITH A QUESTION, WE USUALLY WANT
    TO ANSWER IT.
  • QUESTIONS SHOULD MAKE SOMEONE REALLY THINK.
  • FOR EXAMPLE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF A KID RAN FOR
    PRESIDENT?

7
RIDDLE
  • What is a mammal, lives in the water, and uses
    echolocation to communicate?
  • Dont you enjoy riddles?
  • By starting with a riddle, you hook the reader to
    read more.
