• 1600B.C. People came to live along Tiber River on
  the Italian Peninsula
• Italy is mountainous
• Italian Peninsula has one of the longest
  coastlines in the world.
• Looks like a high heeled boot.
• Looks like it is going to kick the island of
  Sicily.

• Rome-middle of the western coast
• Spreads across 7 low hills
• 15 miles along the Tiber river
• Hills protected them from attacks

The Romans Learn from Other Cultures

• The harbor allowed sailers to meet new people
  from different areas such as Greece.
• Learned new ideas for farming and heard stories
  from each other.
• Climate ideal for crops such as grapes and
  olives.
• Land was warm and moist

• At first they called themselves Latins
• When the village of Rome became more powerful
  they started to call themselves Romans

Etruscan Rule

• Rome grew and prospered
• Attracted more powerful neighbors
• Etruscans-took over Rome in 600 B.C.
• Soon took control of most of the peninsula
• Skilled builders and farmers.
• Romans learned to
• Learned to build aqueducts-structures to carry
  flowing water to supply water to cities.
• Made better weapons and ships.

• Romans didnt like them taking over
• Tarquin-Etruscan noble that murdered the Estrucan
  king
• Romans challenged Etruscans
• Junius Brutus-promise to himself-take the throne
  from Tarquin
• Brutus and his followers forced Tarquin from Rome
  and he became the leader.
