left to climb into their saddles when daylight
    came.

  • They gathered that night sang and they were so
tiered out that they thought that they could not
    in their saddles.

in the slight canyon I sang little sang to myself.

Chapter Five
  • The Spaniards made a small fire and warmed
corncakes. They offered running bird and of some
of the food, but we said that we are not hungry.

running to let us in. What tribe she belonged to
I could not tell, but she was smiling and looked
happier than the Nez Perce girl.

  • When the next full moon was light enough to see
by, running bird and I would steal away and take
    the road to home.

9
Chapter nine
  • On the night after the bailer Rosetta and I went
to the church. I tried to go alone, for this was
the night Nahant had told me to come but the
    Senora went with us.

10
Chapter ten
  • One of them must be camped there now. It is not
good if he sees us. But we cannot go back. Nor
can we get through the forest with out using the
    trail.

11

  • Night was falling as we again reached the stream
and grove cotton woods. We had seen no sign of
the Spaniard during the afternoon, but they were
not vary far behind us endways.
