The Church Shapes Society and Politics
  • The church was the center of life in early
    European culture. For people living during that
    time their lives revolved around the church.
  • Baptisms and weddings were key events in peoples
    lives. It all took place in the church. Pilgrims
    even made trips to religious places.
  • Politics were greatly influenced by the church.

Monks of Cluny
  • They created a new religious order and dedicated
    their lives to religion.
  • The monks of Cluny lived apart from society. The
    had their own community.

Friars
  • Francis of Assisi created a group of people
    called the Franciscans.
  • People that lived in the city and served god that
    reached out to people and helped them to find
    God.
  • They lived within the city. Trying to help people
    become Christians.

Universities are Built

  • Thomas Aquinas wrote a reasoned argument for the
    existence of god.
  • Religious leaders made the first universities.
    Religion, law, medicine, and philosophy were
    taught.
  • Both then and now students took tests to prove
    that they knew what they were learning.

  • They were inspired by god. Some of the cathedrals
    in the middle ages were tall so the people would
    be closer to God.

  • In the middle ages the life of all people
    revolved around the church. Christianity was the
    biggest religion in Europe.

  • A group of English nobles demanded these
    agreements.

  • What were the effects The Magna Carta was an
    important step in establishing democratic
    principles
  • Three commands are no one would be kept in jail
    for no reason. Nobles could no longer take wood
    or resources of others land. People no longer had
    to perform services for a knight.

Changes After the Magna Carta
  • What did the Magna Carta inspire nobles to do
    It inspired the nobles to slowly change into
    parliament.
  • Parliament is the lawmaking body that still
    governs England today.
  • How did the king limit the Magna Carta Even the
    king had to obey the rules of the Magna Carta.

The course of the war
  • During the war the French king dies with no
    heirs to the throne. It caused debate on who
    should take the throne. Finally two men claimed
    the throne. The king of England and a relative of
    the dead king of France.
  • The English started to take the lead in the war.
    Then there was a women named Joan of Arc. She
    claimed that God told her she would drive the
    English out. The people of France rallied behind
    her. The English killed her but the French drove
    the English out and won the war.

  • Some changes in England were that the war
    increased the use of Parliament in England.
  • In France the kings power greatly increased after
    the war. Since they won the war democracy in
    France was killed.

Where it Came From
  • The Black Death came from central and eastern
    Asia.
  • It swept through Europe for 4 years. (1347-1351)

How it Spread
  • Trader unknowingly brought rats with it to
    Mediterranean ports.
  • From there it quickly swept throughout much of
    Europe.
  • Fleas that fed on infected rats passed the plague
    to people.

What disease was it
  • It was called the bubonic plague.
  • The black death claimed over 200 million lives.

Effect on Manor Life
  • The old manor system weakened from the growing
    empires collapsed.
  • Plague survivors found their skills in demand and
    charged more for their labor.
  • Instead of working for the rich peasants now had
    other job

What happened to it
  • It died down but some cases still remained but it
    was not as serious.
