Key Extracts
  • The first Key Extract begins just as Prospero has
finished telling Miranda about how he and she
came to be on the island together, and who is on
the ship that has been caught in the tempest.
Prospero has used his magic to put Miranda to
sleep, and calls Ariel to him.
  • All hail, great master! Grave sir, hail! I
comeTo answer thy best pleasure - be't to
fly,To swim, to dive into the fire, to rideOn
the curled clouds. To thy strong bidding
    taskAriel and all his quality.

Second Key Extract
  • The Second Key Extract opens the last act of the
play. Prospero enters the scene dressed in his
magician's robes, with Ariel by his side.
Ariel describes what's been happening on the
    island. Some shipwreck survivors, including
Alonso, Sebastian, Antonio and Gonzalo, are under
Prospero's spell, by the cave. Alonso says he is
sorry for what he has done wrong, and is full of
worry and desperation. Gonzalo is full of grief
over the pain of his king. Prospero, knows he
can now right the wrongs that have been done to
him. He tells Ariel he will be kind in his
treatment of his enemies. He asks Ariel to fetch
    the shipwreck survivors

Use both extracts
Magical actions, words, characters, effects

  • Use the summaries

In this scene, Prospero reminds Ariel of the
world that he was rescued from.
In this scene, Prospero prepares to re-enter the
civil world and relinquishes his magical powers.

  • Points to Make
  • Prospero as master magician
  • Magical creature Ariel, Caliban, sprites etc
  • Spells
  • Magical objects
  • Magical setting musical island
  • There are images of the elements fire, air and
water, which show that Ariels power is connected
    with nature.
  • Sound effects create dramatic image of the storm,
emphasizing the wildness of the weather and
Ariels power. Images of the coldness, darkness
and harshness of nature show that the island can
be a difficult and dangerous place to live.
  • Images of classical gods and creatures to suggest
that the island is surrounded by mythological
    beings.

you want to get across?

Assess the following response to our question
18
In these extracts, how does the language create a
magical atmosphere?
  • The language and the way the language is
structured helps to create a magical atmosphere
at key moments in the play. Here, where we have
Prospero as master magician, with Ariel his
slave, Prospero enjoys the creation of atmosphere
through his use of language. And later, when
Prospero is relinquishing his use of magic, he
uses language to convey his appreciation of the
    potent art.
  • In the first extract, references to the foul
witch Sycorax with her mischiefs manifold and
sorceries terrible, suggest that the world we
are in is peopled by a range of fantastical
    creatures. The alliterative mischiefs manifold
suggests Prosperos enjoyment of such a world as
does the descriptive freckled whelp hag-born.
The sound patterns of these words enhances the
    mysterious images that are conjured.
  • In the second extract, Prospero indulges the
romantic landscape he has inhabited for some
time. The elves he converses with are referred
to as chasers of Neptune, demi-puppets that
make green sour ringlets by moonlight. The
magic he has performed with the help of elves
includes the noontime sun being bedimmed,
calling up the mutinous winds and creating war
between the green sea and the azured vault.
The visions of an eclipse, wild winds and raging
war between sea and sky create a powerful image
for the audience. The references to the gods and
nature place the visions in a romantic light and
we understand how difficult it must be for
    Prospero to abjure.
