The Solar System
Inner Planets
Mercury Venus Earth Mars
Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto
Outer Planets
3
Mercury
Has No Atmosphere
Daytime temp of 700K Nighttime temp of 100K
This large range in temperature is the largest of
any in our solar system.
There is no moon associated with Mercury.
4
Venus
The atmosphere is much greater in height compared
to Earth. It contains 96.5 CO2 and 3.5 N.
The surface pressure is 90 times the pressure at
sea level on Earth. This would be equivalent to
1km under water. Unprotected humans cannot dive
much more than 100 meters.
Like Mercury, Venus does not have any moons.
5
Earth
Please refer to our web site for information
about Earth
6
Mars
The atmospheric pressure is 1/150 of that on
Earth at sea-level. 93.5 CO2, 2.7 N(nitrogen),
and 1.6 Ar (Argon)
The air on Mars is 13,000 times thinner that that
on Venus
Moons Phobos and Deimos are both shaped like
footballs
Phobos and Deimos are considered some of the
smallest moons in our solar system
7
Jupiter
Largest planet in our solar system with 16 moons
Great Red Spot (100 year hurricane) is twice the
diameter of Earth
86 H and 14 He (makes up atmosphere)
The white clouds are made up of frozen ammonia
and water vapor
The belief that sulfur plays an important role in
the different colors of the clouds such as reds,
brown, and yellows
8
Saturn
Least dense object in the entire solar system
Has 18 moons surrounding its exterior with it
rings at the equator
Since Saturn has a weaker gravity, the inner ice
core is actually bigger than Jupiter
The colors of Saturn are caused by the same
reasons of Jupiter
The atmosphere is composed of 92.4 H and 7.4 He
9
Uranus
Third largest planet in our solar system with 15
moons
Only been visited by Voyager 2
When voyage passed by the South pole was pointed
at the Sun
The poles are the coldest part of the planet and
the equator the warm which makes this an idea
that has puzzled astronomers
Neptune and Uranus are 84 H and 14 He
10
Neptune
Third largest planet in our solar system with 15
moons
Neptunes blue color is because of the absorption
of red light by methane
Has internal heat source and it radiates twice as
much heat as it receives from the sun
Neptune has rings around it and they seem to be
twisted around each other. This was only
apparent from Voyager
Sometimes the furthest planet in our solar system
11
Pluto
Smallest planet and even smaller than seven of
our planets satellites
Most of the time the furthest planet from the Sun
in our solar system
Never been visited by any spacecraft and can only
be faintly seen by the Hubble Telescope
Pluto and Charon spin about a center of mass
synchronously never letting each other see the
other side
