Goals for Apollo 11
  • The primary goal was to land astronauts on the
    Moon and land them safely back on Earth.
  • The secondary goal was to carry out scientific
    studies of the lunar environment
  • Those were both a success
  • In fact Apollo 11 was the first space mission to
    land a human on the Moon safely

Neil Armstrong
  • Neil Armstrong was one of the astronauts that was
    on Apollo11.
  • He was the first to step on the Moon.
  • He was the mission commander on Apollo11
  • Quote on the Moon was one small step for man one
    giant leap for mankind.
  • 1056 pm Neil takes historic first step
  • After Apollo11 he went to teach at the University
    of Cincinnati
  • In 1986 he served on the commission that studied
    the Challenger disaster.

  • Commander module pilot (Columbia)
  • Never stepped on the Moon he was orbiting the
    Moon waiting for the eagle
  • After leaving NASA he went to work at the state
    department.
  • 1 year later he moved to the top of the job at
    the National Air and Space Museum.

  • Lunar module pilot (Eagle)
  • 2nd to step on Moon
  • After Apollo11 he took a tour of duty in the Air
    Force and ran his own company
  • His old boss from NASA hired him to work on the
    space shuttle

  • Apollo11 launched from the Kennedy Space Center
    at 9 32am on July 16,1969.
  • Landed on Sunday, July 20, 1969 with the eagle
  • They spent 8 days, 3 hours, 18 minutes, and 18
    seconds on the Moon.
  • At 154pm on July 21 Eagle leaves moon with
    Columbia

What They Did on the Moon
  • They took pictures
  • They set up experiments such as the seismic
    experiment which measured lunar quakes and meteor
    strikes
  • They walked and explored the surface
  • They discovered that a laser reflector bounces
    laser beams from Earth back to their source

  • They walked on the Moon for 2 hours and 32
    minutes
  • At the Sea of Tranquility they saw thirty miles
    from rocky highlands
