Title: The French and Indian War

1
The French and Indian War
  • Pgs. 264-267

2
Causes of the War
  • 1753 the French built forts in the Ohio River
valley claimed by both France and England
  • The British colonists viewed this move as an
    attack

3
Indian Allies
  • Allies friends in war
  • Both the British and the French were helped by
    their Indian allies.
  • The British could not fight off the French and
their Indian allies on their own.

4
Help from the Army
  • The British government sent its army to help the
colonists defeat the French in 1763.

5
George Washington
  • In 1754 young George Washington led Virginia
troops into disputed lands in southwestern
    Pennsylvania.
  • The Americans built Fort Necessity for
    protection.
  • French troops attacked and Washington along with
his troops were forced to surrender.

6
Results of the War
  • French Canada became a British colony.
  • The British gained control of the lands between
the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi
    River.

Results of the War
  • Cost?
  • The war had cost a lot of money.
  • Keeping British soldiers in North America to
protect its newly won land would cost even more.

9
Taxes
  • In order to cover the cost of the war, King
George III and Parliament decided that the
colonists would have to pay part of the cost of
    the war.
  • The colonists agreed to this plan, but many were
    angry about it.

10
Proclamation of 1763
  • King George ordered
  • The colonists must stop settling the western
    lands won from France.
  • Settlers already living in the area must leave.
  • The western lands were reserved for the Native
    Americans.
  • The King hoped this order would prevent more wars
between the colonists and the Indians.

11
To make matters worse!
  • King George III gave colonial governors more
    authority over the colonies.
  • The governors had the power to change any law
passed by colonial legislatures that the king did
    not like.
  • The colonists did not expect these changes. They
were hoping to gain more control to govern
    themselves.
