Simple Sentences
  • A simple sentence expresses one complete idea.
  • The main characters in ancient Greek dramas were
    at the mercy of their fate.

A simple sentence can have a compound subject, a
compound predicate, or both.
  • Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos were the goddesses
    of fate. (compound subject)
  • They created the fabric of each life and
    scheduled its end. (compound predicate)
  • Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos spun, decided the
    length of, and cut the thread of life. (compound
    subject and compound predicate)

Compound Sentences
  • A compound sentence expresses two or more
    complete ideas that are related and are equal in
    importance.
  • If a sentence is compound, it can always be
    separated into two or more simple sentences.
  • The Trojan War lasted ten years, and Troy was
    destroyed.

Compound Sentences
  • Connect the simple sentences in a compound
    sentence with a conjunction, or connecting word,
    such as and, but, or or.
  • Use a comma between the joined sentences unless
    the sentences are very short and closely related.
  • Helen was the wife of a Greek king, and Paris, a
    prince of Troy, kidnapped her.
  • She was freed and he was killed.

  • You may also join simple sentences with a
    semicolon alone.
  • A champion among warriors fought for the Greeks
    his name was Achilles.

Identify each sentence as simple or compound.
  • Homer was a Greek poet he probably lived around
    700 B.C.
  • Homers two epic poems became the basic textbook
    for every young greek.
  • In the mid-1200s B.C., Greece and the city of
    Troy fought a war.
  • Several centuries later, Homer wrote the Iliad,
    and he also wrote the Odyssey.
  • The Iliad describes three weeks of batle during
    the Trojan War its subject is the rage of
    Achilles.
  • Achilles is a very angry man and has only one
    real friend.
  • Patroclus, the friend of Achilles, is killed, and
    the warriors wrath explodes.
  • Athena, goddess of war, sides with Achilles and
    helps him defeat Troy.

    his wife in Ithaca, but first he must travel for
    ten years.

    luxury, and he stays with her one year.
  • 12. The Sirens call to him with an offer of
    knowledge of the future, but he has himself tied
    to the ships mast and resists their call.
  • 13. Then he stays with the goddess Calypso for
    seven years, and she offers him immortality.
  • 14. At last, Odysseus leaves Calypso he chooses
    to be human and rejoins his family.
