Title: Human
1Human Sexual Response
Chapter 7
2Fig. 7C
3Introduction
- Human sexual reponse has been studied for
centuries. - Books, ballads, songs and poetry have been
written, and a multimillion dollar industry
surrounds it. - Sex is present in much of our culture.
- Sexuality has become intertwined with
- spiritual beliefs, culture and every day
- life.

5Cultural Sexual Tradition
- New Guineascratching and biting (physical)
- Spainsinging and music (emotional, mental)
- Jewishcreativity (spiritual)
- Buddhism, Hinduismenergy (spiritual)
- Western (US) culturesgoal oriented (orgasm)

7Sex and Science
- All this is wonderful, but is sex scientific?
- Is there a formula for the ultimate experience?
- William Masters and Virginia Johnson (1966) wrote
a detailed research book, Human Sexual Response,
which provided information on the bodys response
to sexual stimulation. - Resulted in a better understanding of human
sexulality.
8Masters and Johnsons Cycle
- Sexual response can be divided into 4 parts.
- Excitement, plateau, orgasm, resolution.
- M J have been criticized for their initial
research in that they only collected data from
people who claimed they had achieved orgasm. - M J assumed orgasm was natural in the
biological processes of people.
9Kaplans Model
- Helen Singer Kaplans model of sexual reaction
only consisted of two phases excitement and
orgasmic release. - Sexual desire was also a strong component in her
model. - Brought the concept of motivation for sex into
consideration.
10Fig. 07-04
11Similar or Different?
- Both men and women are capable of experiencing
all four phases of M Js model of sexual
arousal. - However, men and women experience it differently.
- Men tend to reach orgasm faster than women (but
not always), esp. during masturbation when
females can reach orgasm just as quickly as
males.
12Similar or Different?
- Wide variety exists in the response of men and
women to the sexual cycle. - The entire sexual cycle can take several minutes
or several hours. - Sex drives are also different, but it is
generally true that abstenance doesnt trigger a
steam bulidup in either men or women. - Fake orgasms?

14Components of Arousal
- Internal mental
- External physical
- Central Arousal System internal factors,
located in the brain - Peripheral Arousal System external factors,
physical stimulii.
15Components of Arousal
- General arousability differs from person to
person. - Some people can think about sex and experience an
orgasm, where others require stimulation for
extended periods. - Regardless of the method, a strong corelation
exists between mental/physical responsiveness in
men and women.
16Components of Arousal
- Its no secret that men and women view sex
differently. - Men often see it as physical, goal oriented,
where women look for love, security and emotional
gratification. - These ideas have persisted for many centuries.
17Female Sexual Response
18Fig. 7A
19Fig. 07-05
Excitement phase -vasocongestion -thickening of
vaginal walls -raising of uterus -lengthening of
vagina -erection of nipples -sex flush-
20Fig. 07-06
Plateua Phase -outer third of vaginal
wall swells -breasts enlarge -sex flush
increases -HR, BP, respiration all increase
(100-175 minute)
21Fig. 07-07
Orgasmic Phase -pleasurable release of muscle
tension -intense for women -warm feeling
(suffusion) -0.8 second contractions -pelvic
thrusting -muscle contraction -screaming,moaning,
shaking
22Resolution
- Body returns to normal physiological state.
- Desire for sleep (no kidding).
- Multiple orgasms are possible for some women,
often it depends on the type of stimulation.
23Female Orgasmic Types
- Vaginal vs. Clitoral
- Depends on which nerves are stilulated.
- Pudenal nerves (clitoris)
- Pelvic nerves (vagina, cervix, uterus)
24Fig. 7B
Regardless of which orgasm a female experiences,
personal fulfillment concluding sexual activity
has been determined to be the main issue.
25G-spot, ejaculation, Kegels
- Gräfenberg proposed that the anterior vagina was
especially sensitive to stimulation in most
women. - Dubbed the G-spot by researchers, it remains a
point of controversey. - Skene glands (female, similar to prostate,
secrete fluid) - Kegel exercises for strengthening of the
pubococcygeal muscles may enhance sexual response.

27Male Sexual Response
28Excitement phase -vasocongestion -muscular
tension -erection -heart rate, BP,
increase -urethra diameter doubles -nipple
erection (not always)
29Plateau phase -no loss of erection (or
likelihood of it) -increase in testical size
(50) -HR (100-175), BP increases -grasping
movements of hands
30Orgasm -ejaculatory inevitability -muscle
contraction (0.8 seconds) -back arching, muscle
contraction -moaning, yelling, grimacing -perspira
tion
31Resolution
- Immediately following orgasm, nearly 50 of the
male erection is lost. - Body returns to normal state. Muscles relax,
scrotum returns to resting state. - May take 20 minutes to 2 hrs in men.
32Refractory Period
- Man cannot be restimulated to ejaculation.
- Men in their late 30s cannot be stimulated to
orgasm for nearly 30 minutes or so. - This condition increases with age.
- Although many men are capable of having more than
on orgasms, most are satified with one.
33Aging and lack of sexual activity nope!
