About GRNET Project Coordinator
  • GRNET is a state-owned corporation, under the
auspices of the Greek Ministry of Development
General Secretariat for Research and Technology.
  • Mission Statement
  • Provide high-quality international and national
networking services to the Greek academic,
research educational community and to the
public and private sector to support their
    research and educational activities.
  • Promote and disseminate the use of ICT in the
public and private sector towards an eGovernment,
    eLearning and eBusiness environment.
  • Role
  • Operation (VNOC) and upgrade (towards DF/10Gbps)
of the National RE Backbone Electronic Network
    (connecting more than 80 institutions).
  • Coordinates the development of the National Grid
    Infrastructure (storage computing nodes).
  • Provision of backbone networking services to the
Greek School Network (more than 12.000 schools).
  • Operation of the Athens Internet Exchange (AIX),
    peering of Greek commercial ISPs.
  • Development with Greek and international RE
    institutions of Pan-European and Regional
    electronic infrastructures (Pan-European and
Balkan RE Internet Backbone, Pan-European and
    Balkan Grid infrastructure).
  • Introduce small-sized companies into the Internet
economy, focusing on e-business and e-government
    applications.
  • Contributes to the National State policy-making
process by planning and funding a series of
    activities for the introduction of
    Telecommunications and Information Technologies.

3
GRNET Network infrastructure
  • 12-PoP high speed backbone network based on
2.5Gbps leased lambdas and Gigabit routers.
  • Interconnects academic and research institutions
(more than 80 today) at up to 1Gbps and primary
and secondary schools (more than 10.000) at Mbps.
  • A total of up to 1.500.000 potential end-users.
  • International 2x2.5Gbps (to be upgraded to
    2x10Gbps 4Q05)

4
GRNET Grid infrastructure
  • 6 clusters/sites in deployment (770 CPUs, 34 TBs
    storage).
  • Involves all major research and academic
institutes working on Grids-eScience all over
    Greece.
  • High Energy Physics, Bio-informatics,
    Meteorology, Astronomy, Computer
    scientists-Virtual Collaboration Environments
  • Providing services to the Pan-European GRID
community through the EGEE Project and the SEE
    community through the SEE-GRID Project.

5
Dark fibre plans (2005)
  • Initiated the process of acquiring dark fibre
    spans in 4Q2004.
  • Tenders for DF issued in 1Q2005 (first public
ones released in Greece) aiming at three fibre
    lines
  • One terrestrial in northern Greece
    (Thessaloniki-Xanthi)
  • Two submarine lines in the Aegean Sea
    (Syros-Samos islands and Athens-Crete)
  • DF Tenders requirements
  • 15-year IRUs.
  • Maintenance support at layer-1 (against fibre
    cuts and fibre performance degradation).
  • Fibre pairs supporting 10Gbps transmission.
  • Option of installing GRNET optical equipment
(passive or active) in intermediate locations of
    the end-to-end fibre spans.
  • Monitoring system for automatic detection of
fibre cuts or performance degradation with
indication of each Failure Report Time
  • Availability of at least 99
  • Optional protection of fibre spans.
  • Currently (October 2005) in delivery phase.
  • Tender for transmission equipment has been issued.

6
Dark fibre plans (2006)
  • The whole of the GRNET backbone is planned to be
implemented using dark fibre pairs obtained via
    long-term IRUs.
  • Within 2005, tenders will be released requesting
for dark fibre between all of the existing GRNET
PoPs currently operating with leased lambdas.
  • Actions for obtaining dark fibre towards the
northern part of Greece, in an attempt to
establish cross border fibre links with
    neighbouring countries, are also planned.
  • Tender for long haul, multiple wavelengths
    optical transmission switching equipment also
    planned

7
Broadband Access (DF local loops)
  • Objectives
  • Broadband Access services to the GRNET research
network for academic and research institutions.
  • 39 academic institutions
  • 14 research institutions
  • Provision of 1 Gigabit speed access to the
nearest node of GRNET-2 network to all the
    institutions
  • Obtain dark fibre IRU contract for Gigabit access
to current nodes of GRNET-2 network, using
    optical technologies
  • For academic and research institutions in Athens
    and Thessalonica.
  • Obtain equipment for access to the current
    GRNET-2 research network.
  • Total Budget 9.982.315
  • Activities undertaken from GRNET in order to
ensure the interoperability with the current
backbone network, the quality and the optimal
utilization of the provided access services of
    GRNET.

8
Greek School Network
  • The Greek School Network uses GRNET as backbone
    with 7 entry points.
  • The Distribution network consists of 51 nodes
    (one in each prefecture)
  • 9 main nodes,
  • 42 secondary nodes
  • and are equipped with 60 routers, 41 servers, a
large number of telecommunication circuits and
    the appropriate software

Role - GRNET
  • GRNETs role is evidently wishing to promote
awareness in the region, ease the digital divide
and reduce the so-called brain drain and
justifies the coordination initiative of the
    project.
  • GRNET will be leading WP1, WP2 WP3. In WP4, WP5
and WP6 GRNET will contribute to all the
activities not with a leading role.
  • GRNET will be responsible for the management of
the project, assessing the project progress,
coordinating the overall work and informing the
project sponsors (EC and National Governments)
    according to the standard procedures.
  • GRNET will establish and maintain the project
management information system, will maintain the
contractual relationships, will be the main
responsible for the preparation of cost
    statements and financial transactions.
  • GRNET will also provide directions, feedback and
guidance in all WPs based on the experience
gained by the participation in national and
international projects. In this way GRNET will
play the role of linchpin liaising these projects
    together.
  • GRNET will assess the user community needs and
    will compile the regional networking
requirements. In addition, GRNET will be
responsible for following the execution of the
sustainability plan and for seeking additional
sources of funding. GRNET will also lead the
documentation of the integrated conclusions from
    the requirements studies and analysis.
  • GRNET will sign subcontracts (one or more) to
cover the networking fees necessary for the
network deployment and operation as well as for
    equipment upgrades. These subcontracts will
    result from public tendering procedures.
  • GRNET will contribute in the acceptance tests, in
the configuration of the network and the network
    operations/management.
  • GRNET will be also the main responsible for the
deployment of various core services on the
    infrastructure (Routing and Switching services,
Domain Name System, NTP service, Web and FTP
    service, Mail relay/Mailing lists, SLA
management, DDoS attack prevention and detection)
and will cooperate with other partners in the
    deployment of other services
  • In WP6, GRNET will provide the project portal and
