The beginning of civilization

• The first civilization began between the Tigris
  in the Euphrates Rivers in what is today Iraq.

Ancient history of this land

• Over the past five thousand years, the land that
  is now Iraq, was ruled by many peoples including
  the Babylonians and the Ottomans.

• 1932 3 October - Iraq becomes an independent
  state after the British leave the area

• 1979 - Saddam Hussein becomes President

• 1980-88 -the eight year long bloody Iran/Iraq
  war).
• During these years, Iraq received significant
  amounts of money, weapons, and support from the
  United States

• 1990 2 August Under the leadership of Hussein,
  Iraq invaded Kuwait
• 1991 When Iraq did not leave Kuwait, forces led
  by the U.S. began aerial bombing of Iraq
  ("Operation Desert Storm").

• Iraq was quickly defeated in Operation desert
  storm but Sadaam Hussein was left in power.
• 1998 31 October - Iraq ended cooperation with UN
  who was supposed to be observing them

• 2002 September - US President George W Bush tells
  the UN to confront the "grave danger" of Iraq -
  or stand aside as the US acts.

• 2003 20 March
• US begins campaign to overthrow Saddam Hussein.

• 2004 June - US handed over power to a temporary
  Iraqi government

• Pictures of US soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners

• 2003 December - Saddam Hussein captured in
  Tikrit. He is executed three years later

• Suicide Bombing against civilian and coalition
  forces intensifies and a civil war breaks out
  between rival groups
• Violence raged as 2.8 million people emigrate

• 2007 January - US President Bush announced a new
  Iraq strategy a surge in troops

TODAY

• The U.S. Military continues work with Iraqi
  police and military in planning for an eventual
  departure
• President Obama has begun troop reductions
• 2009 Much of Iraq has been handed over the Iraqi
  security forces and violence has been
  significantly reduced.
