Moving West

• Destruction of Native Americans smallpox,
  cholera, typhoid, removal, relocation, attacks,
  and escape.
• Destruction of the buffalo food, fuel, twine,
  clothing, etc.
• Dawes Severalty Act Forced civilization of
  Natives. Used land grants to break down social
  order of tribes and chiefs. Kill the Indian, and
  save the man.

Problems in the West

• Deflation and low prices because of higher
  output.
• Drought, grasshopper plagues, cotton-boll
  weevils, and freight rates.
• Grangers unite Greenback Party
• Farmers Alliance in the 1870s grew into the
  Populists Party nationalization and free coinage
  of silver.

Westward

• Miners Fifty-niners, Pikes Peakers, and the
  Comstock Lode in Nevada.
• Beef, cattle drives, and cowboys.
• Homestead Act of 1862 160 acres of FREE land.
• Farming was extremely tough though.
• Sustenance farming replaced by cash crops.

Panic of 1893

• Coxeys Army descended on Washington to demand
  relief to unemployment, public works, and new
  legal tender. (Arrested for walking on the grass)
• Pullman Strike 1/3 wage cut, but housing and
  goods remained stagnant. Eugene V. Debs and the
  American Railway Union boycotted.
• Cleveland sends in troops because of the
  disruption of the postal service and the military

The Election of 1896

• Republican William McKinley backed by wealthy
  Ohioans maintain the Gold Standard and trickle
  down wealth distribution.
• Democrat/Populists William Jennings Bryan Cross
  of Gold speech and free coinage of silver.
• McKinley with his 16 million budget won.
