Overview of Preparedness
  • "The day of the prom is not when you
  • take dance lessons" Snoopy
  • Make hazard risk analysis the foundation for the
    school plan and preparedness program.
  • Identify hazards with the most frequency and the
ones with the biggest impact to develop a plan
that covers 99 of the events that will impact
    the school.
  • Collaborate with local law enforcement, emergency
managers, fire officials to create the
relationships needed for an effective response.

3
Components of Preparedness Planning
  • A good preparedness program involves
  • Creating an all-hazards plan
  • Creating a training program to support the plan
  • Identifying and obtaining supplies resources to
    support the plan
  • Developing the relationships with other agencies
that will help when responding to an event
  • Practicing the plan

4
School Plan
  • The School Plan answers two very important
questions who in the organization is supposed to
    do what?
  • Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs) identify
    actions to take and how.
  • Faculty staff on campus are organized into
response teams using Incident Command as a model
for organizing and responding to an unusual event
    on campus.

5
Components of a School Plan
  • An organizational chart identifying every staff
member, what their job is, and who they report to
  • A job description, check list and supplies
    necessary to undertake each position
  • A training program to insure that faculty/staff,
students and parents know what to do and what to
    expect when emergencies/disasters occur

6
Dont Reinvent the Bicycle
  • Incident Command is a proven management tool for
    managing unusual events.
  • The multi-hazard planning program for schools has
a model plan that includes an organizational
    chart and checklists.
  • Modifications must be made to make the plan
appropriate for school, age of students and
    resources on campus.

7
Practice, Practice, Practice
  • Start small and orient your staff, students and
    parents to the plan.
  • Determine measurable objectives to test for each
    drill.
  • Conduct drills and then evaluate and make changes
to ensure that the plan is effective for your
    school.
