11Interview with the Author
- Amazon.com How did you begin writing? Did you
intend to become an author, or do you have a
specific reason or reasons for writing each book?
- L.C. I began "How To Find A Good Job In Seattle"
more than six years when I was frustrated by the
number of people I met who didn't know how to
start--or sustain--a job search. - Amazon.com What authors do you like to read?
What book or books have had a strong influence on
you or your writing? - L.C. I read fiction for pleasure, but I'm most
impressed by writers who don't mince words, who
determine what needs to be said and then say it
concisely. - Amazon.com Do you meet your readers at book
signings, conventions, or similar events? Do you
interact with your readers electronically through
e-mail or other online forums?

12Interview Continued
- L.C. I'm so fortunate I get to meet my readers
at book signings and speeches at bookstores and
through classes at Seattle-area community
colleges. I also write Q amp A-style job-search
columns for the Journal American, the Valley
Daily News and Today's Careers, so that's another
way I hear from my readers. - Amazon.com Could you describe the mundane
details of writing How many hours a day do you
devote to writing? Do you write a draft on paper
or at a keyboard (typewriter or computer)? Do you
have a favorite location or time of day (or
night) for writing? What do you do to avoid--or
seek!--distractions? - L.C. My job-search guides require thousands of
interviews to ensure the information is complete
and updated, so I spent hours and hours (and
hours!) on the telephone. The actual writing time
is limited compared to the months devoted to
updating data for each edition.
13Personal Impression
- I found it to be informative, personal to anyone
from the Seattle area, and filled with familiar
landmarks (companies) we have seen for years
yet, many have never seriously thought about
working for these companies. This book stimulates
the thought process in regards to finding the
right job. It takes childcare, transportation,
housing, and job related costs into consideration
forcing the reader to look beyond the job search
and into the jobs realities. - I believe this book would be an asset for any
newcomer to the Seattle area who is in need of a
job/career, and transitioning into this area from
anywhere in the English speaking world. I was
unable to find a translated version in another
language (any language), but it offers a variety
of job counseling services that are sure to help. - For a place to start after deciding to look for
another job, this book is a necessity whether one
is from this area or not. It offers a variety of
search options, helps, counseling, and may
prevent unnecessary pavement pounding while
encouraging productive searches.
