keep your child totally safe.
5There are so many ways to get around these
programs, either by accident or on purpose, that
the Internet savvy child or teen may see them as
a challenge.
6We all know that kids like to test the limits,
and it wont be long before they find a way
around the blocks.

bedroom.

you really know what they are doing?
9The best place for a computer is in a common
living space where you can keep an eye on them
while they are working a kitchen, living room,
TV room, or dining room is ideal.

internet files. The computer keeps track of
where the users have gone. If you are curious,
check it out.

Health class you may find suspicious sites listed
in the history and cookies. Check with their
teachers if you are not sure.

- When the computer visits most sites the site
leaves a Cookie on the computer. - Checking your cookies is quite easy.

Right-click on the Start button

Choose Search.

Type Cookies in the search box titled All or
part of a file name. Make sure it says Local
Drive C\ in the Look In box.

Choose the folder CookiesgtgtC\Documents and
Settings\... by double-clicking on it.

Column 1 tells you the name of the user who
accessed the site (this must be a registered user
account).

Column 2 tells you size of the cookie. This is
not that important.

Columns 3, 4, and 5 tell you the different dates
of access. If these dates are different then the
site has been accessed more than once.

- The history is easy to check, but the history
only records addresses that are typed in it
does not record the addresses of sites accessed
through Google or Yahoo.

history -click on the down arrow -click
the history button

Clicking on the history button will reveal a list
of sites accessed in the last 3 weeks, and will
take you to those sites if you click on the links.
43Both of these methods will allow you to see what
has been accessed recently. To choose how long
a history is kept follow the next steps

In your web browser choose Tools and Internet
Options.

Set the number of days you would like the history
to be kept. You can also select a home page on
this menu.

- Usually, when you access a website, the computer
creates a temporary file that stores information
needed to refresh the screen. - To check your temporary files follow these steps

Go back to the Search menu and type .tmp in
the All or part of a file name box.

The results of your search may give you
information about where recent users have been.
50One more thing
51You can try checking your cache, but be careful
not to delete anything in this folder as some of
it is very important in the running of your
machine.

Click on the Start menu and choose My
Computer.

- .doc
- .xls
- .ppt
- To open them simply double-click on the icon.
DO NOT OPEN files ending in .exe! These may be
necessary files, or they may be viruses. Do not
delete them either!
