Title: Early Humans Final Exam

1
Early HumansFinal Exam
  • Do your best and remember to answer every
    question using complete sentences.

2
Australopithecus
  • Why is the discovery of Lucy so important to the
    scientists?
  • When and where was Lucys species found?
  • Why did the Australopithecus not have art and
religion? How do you think this affected their
    species?

3
Answers
  • The discovery of Lucy is so important because her
bones were the first human-like ancestor of man
    to be found.
  • The bones of Lucy were found in Ethiopia, Africa
in 1974. This is where her species is thought to
    have lived.
  • Australopithecus did not have art or religion
because they were too busy surviving in the harsh
wilderness. This affected their species because
their culture was focused only on survival.

4
Homo Habilis
  • What did Homo Habilis use fire for and how did
    they get it?
  • What does Homo Habilis mean and why do you think
    they were given this name?
  • Did Homo Habilis use caves for shelter? Why or
    why not?

5
Answers
  • Homo Habilis used fire for light, for warmth, and
to scare away animals. They could only control
fire when they found it from a lightning strike.
  • Homo Habilis is Latin for handy man. They were
given this name because they were the first tool
    makers.
  • Homo Habilis did not use caves for shelter
because other creatures could be living in these
caves. Homo Habilis did not have good enough
    tools to fight such predators.

6
Homo Erectus
  • From what did Homo Erectus make their tools?
  • What did the women gather?
  • What game did men hunt?

7
Answers
  • Homo Erectus mainly made their tools out of
    animal bones.
  • The women gathered grapes, nuts, and berries.
  • Men hunted pigs, deer, and other animals.

8
Neanderthals
  • What materials were used by the Neanderthals to
    make paint?
  • Why did Neanderthals kill mammoths?
  • What form did the religion of the Neanderthals
take and why do you think that they formed their
    religious beliefs?

9
Answers
  • Neanderthals used chalk for white paint, iron
oxide for red paint, and charcoal for black
    paint.
  • They killed mammoths because they used the meat
for food, the skins for clothing, and the bones
    and skin for shelter.
  • There religion consisted of funeral feasts and
burial ceremonies. The Neanderthals formed their
religion because they wanted to explain what
happened to people after they died. They began
to believe in an afterlife, and that is why
    they created their ceremonies.

10
Cro-Magnon
  • How were the Cro-Magnons able to hunt
    successfully?
  • How did the Cro-Magnons use fire?
  • How did the Cro-Magnons guard themselves and
    their belongings from other predators?

11
Answers
  • Cro-Magnons were able to hunt successfully
because of their precise tools and because they
practiced their skills on trees or on brush.
  • Cro-Magnons used fire for heat, for light, to
cook their food, to scare away predators, and to
    help them hunt.
  • Cro-Magnons kept their belongings safe by either
burying them underground in front of their
shelters or by putting them in their tents or
    huts.

12
Modern Humans
  • What was the Homo Sapiens's clothing made of?
What type of change at that time caused their
clothes to be different than the clothing of
    earlier humans?
  • How were Homo Sapiens's homes different from
    humans before them? Why?
  • List at least three types of changes Homo Sapiens
made to make them a more developed and
satisfactory species than other early humans?

13
Answers
  • Clothing was made out of (sometimes dyed)
leather, animal hide, cloth, leaves, grass and
other types of natural material. Sometimes, they
were sewn together with animal guts or string.
The weather had changed to a warmer, hotter
climate in Eastern Africa, so they had developed
to also make cooler and lighter clothes for the
    summer.
  • A Homo Sapiens's home wasn't moved around so much
as the earlier humans before them did. This was
because these Homo sapiens learned not to follow
the animals that much, but to rather have the
animals come to them, and they started to build
permanent houses. However, in the winter season,
they would pack and follow the animals. In the
summer season, they would return to their
permanent homes again. To conclude, they mainly
    had two chief houses.
  • Homo sapiens improved by a lot than other early
humans because they had bigger brains and were
more developed physically. They could also make
sophisticated tools and even used scaffolds to
paint! Another thing is that these Homo sapiens
knew how to build fires. Moreover, they knew how
to use the fire to cook raw meat into edible
meat. These are just some of the many things that
    made these modern humans smarter.
