Lube Oil Analysis
  • Important to confirm the condition of the running
    charge of Lube Oil
  • Looks at-
  • Viscosity
  • TAN
  • TBN
  • Wear Metals
  • Particle Count
  • Uses Particle Count to trigger Scanning Electron
    Microscope (SEM)

Lube Oil Analysis Particle Quantifier
  • Why use Particle Quantifier?
  • PQ will measure ALL the free ferrous debris in
your used oil samples not just those less than 5
    to 10 micron in size.
  • PQ will measure ferrous debris directly in the
sample bottle, from membrane filters, glass
    slides or sample pots.
  • PQ requires no sample preparation, it is simple
    to operate.
  • PQ is available as automated versions for batch
    processing in the laboratory.
  • Provides the trigger for Scanning Electron
Microscope as the final analysis tool.

Case Study One The Problem
On Sat. 23rd March during the routine daily site
inspection, wind turbine generator (WTG) 8 was
found to have a "Therm gear oil pump" error and
the circuit breaker tripped. The circuit breaker
was re-closed and tripped again immediately. The
oil pump was found to be damaged The pump was
inspected and the failure appeared to have been
caused by debris entrapment. The helical section
of the gear unit was inspected all gears and
pinion shafts were found to be in a satisfactory
condition. The oil in the unit was checked for
metallic debris none was found. The oil filter
was checked, metallic particles were found. The
unit was test run under load (lubrication pump
not running) and was found satisfactory. Now the
question was, had the debris come from the pump
or the gear? Particles from the pump were sent by
a chip-card to Spectro Oil Analysis,

16
Case Study One The Action
The answer clearly showed the origin of the
particles found in the oil pump of WTG 8. We
could see that the particles were from a bearing
and not from the oil pump itself , this indicated
that a bearing was failing somewhere in the
Gearbox and these particles had subsequently
damaged the pump. No bearing damage could be seen
from the inspection cover, thus we had to
conclude that the failing bearing was either one
of the planetary bearings or the large low speed
bearing. These bearings cant be exchanged in the
turbine, so we have to exchange the gearbox and
send it for repair. The gear suppliers report
concluded that the annulus ring had failed due to
damage sustained whilst running in a previous
gearbox before being fitted into the current
unit. The wear had caused the planet bearings to
fail generating the particles found in the lube
oil pump.

Case Study Two
A 750 kW gearbox in Norway was rumbling. No
failure could be seen through the inspection
cover. But a lot of wear was found in the filter
bowl. A sample of these particles was sent to
Spectro. The report from Spectro concluded that
the debris was bearing material - lots of it. No
bearing damage could be seen through the
inspection cover view, so we had to conclude that
the failing bearing was either the planet bearing
or the large low speed bearing. These bearings
couldn't be exchanged in the turbine, so the box
had to be exchanged and sent for repair.

Case Study Two The Bearing
The report from the gear supplier concluded that
it was clear that the low speed bearing had
failed completely, see attached photo (See

Successful Wind Turbine Monitoring Requires-
  • The Correct Lube Oil Selection including an
interested partner with the appropriate back-up
    programmes
  • Quality Oil Analysis, which must include PQ
    analysis
  • Trigger points to activate SEM investigation
  • Active dialogue based on findings
  • Commitment on both sides
