Oliver Scott
  • Games Design Level 2

2
Introduction
  • I take an interest in the art, visual side of
games and interactive multimedia. I try to
reflect this in the work I produce.
  • Currently working on two major projects
  • Games Design 2 A group project based on Disney
  • Aspects of Play Platform game in a retro style

3
Games Design 2
  • Group Project set by an external client.
  • Made in flash
  • Top down racing game using Disney characters and
    environments
  • Big multiplayer focus
  • Level design and UI

4
Aspects of Play
  • Side scrolling 2D Platformer
  • Made in Director
  • New style of play with the swinging ability
  • Very stylised imagery
  • Draws on my strengths and influences heavily

5
Influences Pt.1
  • Retro platform games (Sonic and Mario)
  • Kids games
  • Cartoon and Comic culture (Invader Zim, Tank
    Girl)
  • Online flash animation community

6
Influences Pt.2
  • Piet Mondrian Bright colours and uniform lines
  • Andy Warhol Screenprinting technique
  • Damien Hirst Again, bright colours but in a
    rather erratic sense
  • Julian Opie Mixing simple caricatures and bold
    colours

Text 1
  • Mirror Mirror
  • All the conversation about photorealistic
graphics and the immersive qualities of such a
thing seems to miss one point. We already have a
    perfect, real time, interactive, 3D
representation of the world presented on a 2D
    surface. Its called a mirror.

    Critical Videogame Theory.

Text 2
  • (On the Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker)
  • Many feel that the cel-shading gave Wind Waker a
cartoon-like or childish look. One fan writes
of encounting the new aesthetic for the first
time, I felt as though something had been stolen
from me Other forum users remark, in comments
that mirror thousands by like-minded gamers, The
graphics ruined the game and Wind Waker
    destroyed everything Zelda stood for
  • - Quote taken from www.slashdot.org a gaming
    website.

Conclusion
  • Stand up for less serious visual approaches
  • Take influences from everywhere but generally
    quite specific areas
  • Believe that a childish appearance can be for a
    mature audience also
  • Ultimately who needs realism, real-life
simulators when you can give people something
    theyve never seen before.
