  • This portion of the HR Liaison Training may seem

  • Each employee relations case is unique
  • Therefore, there is not one particular formula
    that is applied to resolve or address personnel
    matters within the workplace

Employee Supervisor Relationship
  • Employee Should be informed of the standards
    by which performance will be evaluated and to be
    given reasonable feedback and support necessary
    to meet those expectations
  • Supervisor Should communicate the standards of
    effective performance and provide continued
    feedback regarding performance
  • COMMUNICATION IS KEY!!

Importance of Documentation
  • If it isnt documented, it didnt happen
  • What to track and document
  • Document dates and times of critical incidents
  • Document the same types and categories of
    information for each employee
  • Review performance periodically
  • Identify strong weak points on performance
  • Note any patterns of improvements or decline
  • Track commendations to employee
  • Documentation supports communication

Performance Appraisals
  • USPS
  • Three different types of PAs for USPS employees
  • 1) Probationary Submit on the 6 month
    anniversary in a new position
  • 2) Annual Process not Event due in HR in
    February
  • 3) Special Contact Employee Relations first
    and work directly with us. Formal process for
    dealing with performance issues.
  • AP
  • One type of PA for AP employees
  • 1) Annual Process not Event due in HR in
    February

Progressive Discipline
  • The concept behind UCFs progressive disciplinary
    procedure is to provide employees as much
    information, and feedback as needed, and ample
    opportunity for them to improve behavior
  • Regulation 3.0191-- Disciplinary Action for the
    University Support Personnel System

Terminations
  • Prior to any action being taken
  • ALL regular and probationary USPS and AP
    terminations are reviewed with Human Resources
  • All disciplinary terminations are processed and
    handled by Employee Relations
  • It is important to work closely with Employee
    Relations. If you are involved in such a
    situation, remember the importance of
    communication and documentation
  • The departments case and result is based upon
    the facts that the department is able to
    effectively support

What should you do?
  • If you are approached by an employee or
    supervisor with questions or complaints,
  • Encourage employee to work with his/her
    supervisor
  • Encourage employee to work with his/her
    Department Head
  • If no response, refer employee to HR-Employee
    Relations (407-823-2771)
