to understand native spoken and written Spanish
and to increase your skill at expressing yourself
in more complex situations. The class emphasizes
oral communication and listening comprehension in
a culturally authentic context. Students will
also learn to read short texts and write
paragraph-length compositions. A cultural
perspective is introduced through films, music,
newspapers, magazines, etc. Course materials.

The 100 possible points are distributed in
the following manner Tests 50 Web-SAM
10 Oral test 10 Attendance
Participation 10 Homework Tutor
10 Presentation Quizzes 10   Attendance.
Because frequent exposure to a foreign language
is a necessity for attaining fluency, daily
attendance is required. You cannot pass the
course if you miss more than nine (9) classes. If
you miss one class, you will get behind. If you
miss class excessively, it will adversely affect
your attendance and participation grade, besides
hindering your performance on quizzes and tests.
If you do not need to attend this class to pass
the chapter exams, you belong in an a more
advanced Spanish class. An attendance record
will be kept and will be considered as part of
the participation component of your final grade.
The following scale will be used to calculate
your attendance grade (50 possible points)

6............................. 30
0-2............................
50 7.............................
25 3...............................
45 8.............................
20 4...............................

NOTE Consistently late arrival or early
departure may affect your attendance grade at
your professors discretion. Arriving late is
impolite and disruptive. Please make every
effort to arrive on time. Participation. Active
participation is crucial in learning to speak
foreign language. The participation grade is
based on both quality and quantity of your
participation, where quality is determined by
active, on-task participation in group
activities, by coming to class with homework
prepared, by volunteering, by being prepared when
called upon, by showing respect to others, etc.
Feel free to discuss your participation grade
with your professor at any time during the
term. A (40-50) Volunteers regularly,
always prepared with homework, participates
actively and on task group activities.
B (30-39) Usually volunteers, usually
prepared when called on, usually on task in-group
activities. C (20-29) Sometimes
volunteers, sometimes prepared when called on,
usually on task in-group activities.
D (10-19) Almost never volunteers,
sometimes prepared when called on, seldom on task
in-group activities. E (00-10) Never
volunteers, seldom prepares homework, does not
stay on task in-group activities.

Web-SAM / Homework. Assignments will be given
daily. The homework grade (5) will be calculated
based on your completion of specific activities
from the text, and other homework assigned by and
turned in to the professor. Your workbook (10)
will be calculated based on your completion of
activities for each chapter on Web-Sam website.
When you are assigned an exercise from the
textbook or Web-Sam, be sure to read over and
study the corresponding grammar and vocabulary
section in your textbook and INTERACTIVE CD-ROM
first so you can understand the concept before
doing any writing. The exercises can be done at
your own pace, but remember, each chapter starts
in a given day and time, and ends in the same
way. See the due dates in your calendar. Tests.
Four chapter tests as indicated on calendar.
Tests will cover all new material since the last
test, videos and notes from class. If you know
ahead of time that you will not be able to attend
class on the day of a test or quiz, or if you are
a nervous or slow test-taker, please arrange with
me beforehand to take exams and quizzes at a time
other than in class. Final test. Will be
comprehensive, and will cover 25 from earlier
chapters and 75 from chapters X and XIX. Oral
test. A short interview or role-play by two
students and the professor to assess oral
proficiency at the end of the term. Quizzes. Five
chapter quizzes related to vocabulary. There are
no make-ups. Presentación. One or two students
should prepare an oral presentation to the class
during five (5) or ten (10) minutes. Talk with
your professor before to chose your topic. Tutor
conversation. Five times during the term, you
will be required to meet with a qualified
conversation partner to have a 15-minute
conversation in Spanish. To do your conversation
with a tutor from the Spanish Department, reserve
time and date using the sign-sheet posted in
Walton 2nd floor after the second week of classes
or make arrangements with your approved
conversation partner. Your conversation partner
will be one of the following
1- A tutor from the Spanish Department.
2- A native Spanish speaker
from WU. 3- A friend who
has a good Spanish background.
4- A 3rd or 4th year Spanish student from
WU If you choose 2, 3 or 4, ask your friend to
write to me at my E-mail, a paragraph in Spanish,
explaining his or her background and ability in
spoken and written Spanish by the beginning of
the second week of classes. I will be in my
office a lot, and not just during office hours.
Please feel free to drop in if you have a
question or concern or need practice with
something. Students with disabilities should
check in with The Disability Services Office in
Bishop Wellness Center as early as
possible.
