2What to do during a medical emergency
-
- Call Roanoke City EMS at 9-911 (in-house) or 911
(cell phone). - Give the dispatcher as much information as
possible regarding the nature of the
injury/illness and whether or not the victim is
conscious. - DO NOT hang up until directed to do so by the
dispatcher, so that the information can be
forwarded to the emergency personnel. - After making the emergency call Return to the
victim. Â Keep the victim as calm and
comfortable as possible. Remain with the
victim until emergency personnel arrive. - Automated External Defibrillators are available
in the lobby of CRCH
3What you should do during a FIRE
- Stay calm.
- Pull the nearest fire alarm and call 9-911
(in-house) or 911 (cell phone). - Give your name and location of the fire. Do not
hang up until the police dispatcher tells you to
do so. - Close the door to the room if the fire is
contained there. - Leave the building immediately.
- Inform others as you pass them to leave the
building immediately. - Walkdont runto the nearest exit.
- Never use elevatorsan elevator may become a
trap. - Notify emergency personnel immediately if you, or
someone you know, are in the building with a
physical impairment, or you suspect someone may
be trapped inside.Â
4What to do in the event of an EXPLOSION
- In the event of an explosion, IMMEDIATELY take
cover from possible falling glass or debris. - Pull a fire alarm station.
- Once it is safe to do so, call Carilion Clinic
Police at 7-7911 (in-house) or (540) 981-7911
(cell phone). - Relay the following information - Your location
- Cause of the explosion, if known- Area where
explosion occurred- Injuries - Evacuate the area as soon as it is safe to do so.
- Follow instructions from authorities.Â
5Active Shooter/Hostile Intruder
- In the event of an active shooter or hostile
intruder, instructions are to go to the nearest
room, lock and barricade the door. Silence all
noise devices, such as radios, computer speakers
and cell phones and remain quiet. Notify
authorities as soon as possible and follow
instructions from authorities. - Attempts should be made to protect the safety of
any affected persons, without bringing harm to
oneself. - College Administration, Carilion Police and local
law enforcement will immediately assess the
situation to determine appropriate actions. - After the incident, a thorough investigation will
be conducted by the appropriate personnel and law
enforcement.
6Biological Threat Response
- In the event of a biological threat, officials
may not immediately be able to provide
information on what you should do. It will take
time to determine what the illness is, how it
should be treated, and who is in danger. If you
experience symptoms of nausea, difficulty
breathing, convulsions, disorientation, or
patterns of illness inconsistent with natural
disease, notify authorities. Â Watch television,
listen to radio, or check the Internet for
official news and information including signs and
symptoms of the disease and areas in danger. - The first evidence of an attack may be when you
notice symptoms of the disease caused by exposure
to an agent. Be suspicious of any symptoms you
notice, but do not assume that any illness is a
result of an attack. Use common sense and
practice good hygiene. -
- If you become aware of an unusual and suspicious
substance nearby - Move away quickly
- Wash hands with soap and water
- Contact authorities
- Seek medical attention if you become sick
- Follow instructions from authorities
7Bomb Threat
- Immediate response is necessary with a threat of
an alleged placement of a bomb or other
explosive. - When receiving a threat immediately contact
Carilion Police at 540-981-7911 or 77911 from an
in-house phone. - Attempt to gain as much information as possible
from the individual concerning -
- The location of the bomb.
- The time of detonation.
- Document the telephone number the call is coming
from if possible. - Be alert to background noises.
8Bomb Threat
- Attempt to write the exact wording of the threat
and ask the caller to repeat if necessary. - Note any distinguishing voice characteristics of
the caller. - If the threat is received electronically, save
the message and print if possible. - If received in person, get a physical description
and direction of travel. - Do not handle any threat received by paper or
note. - If a note is found, do not handle any items
within the immediate area. - Complete a Bomb Threat Response Form as soon as
possible Bomb Threat Check List.
9Bomb Threat
- Carilion Police Dispatch shall immediately
dispatch a police officer to the location where
the threat was received. If the threat was
received off campus property, the dispatcher will
notify the appropriate law enforcement agency. - Any suspicious items shall be reported the
Carilion Police. - College personnel may be utilized to search their
areas at the direction of emergency and law
enforcement authorities.
10Hazardous Material Spill
- Any substance should be
- considered a hazard if it poses
- health, life or safety risk when released from
its containment. - Contact Carilion Police to notify the Carilion
Haz-mat Team. - Stay away from the immediate area and do not
approach anyone unless specifically directed by a
Haz-Mat Team member.
11Hazardous Material Spill
- An incidental spill of a hazardous material which
does not pose a significant safety or health risk
in the immediate area, nor have a potential to
become an emergency within a short time frame,
may be safely cleaned by personnel familiar with
the hazards of the chemicals in which they work. - Consult the Materials Safety Data Sheet if in
doubt of precautions. - Have anyone who may have been exposed or becomes
ill to complete an Event Report and report to
Employee Health or the Emergency Department. - For spills that exceed internal response
capability, local Fire/EMS shall be notified. - Follow instructions from authorities.
12Evacuations
- In the CRCH building, evacuations will occur
immediately when an alarm sounds or through
notification by emergency personnel or the
emergency message system. The evacuation
gathering place is in the CRCH front parking lot
off the 3rd floor main entrance. We are to
gather completely in the front lot and not in
front of the building or in the roadway. -
- The Fralin House, Registrars Office and Roanoke
Higher Education Center also utilize evacuation
plans upon announcement of a fire or fire alarm
activations. - Be familiar with designated exits in your areas.

17Emergency Floor Monitors
Emergency Floor Monitors are utilized to assist
with evacuations, as well as a means for
emergency notifications.
18Emergency Message System
- During emergency situations, the College will
communicate to the campus community in a variety
of ways, including e2Campus, email, the JCHS
website, flyers and emergency floor monitors. -
19e2Campus
- e2Campus is an emergency message system that
allows the College to send a short mobile text
alert to all students, faculty and staff who have
subscribed to the service. - The text messages will only be sent out in cases
of imminent danger, or when an emergency
situation will impact a significant number of
people.
20Safety Plan
- The Colleges Safety Committee serves as an
advisory committee reporting to the Dean for
Administrative Services. -
- The Safety Committee includes representation from
engineering and maintenance, environmental
services, laboratories, staff, faculty,
administration, Physical Plant Officer,
technology, student services, security services
and student body. - This committee monitors compliance with
regulations and federal, state and local laws in
addition to reviewing current or writing new
policies and procedures. - The committee meets every other month.
21Department of Criminal Justice System
- Violence Against Women Grant
In 2008 the College was awarded a grant from the
Department of Justices Office on Violence
Against Women to expand its programming and
safety features. We are working with the
Carilion Police, City of Roanoke Police, and
other external partners to provide additional
training for police and security officers,
resident assistants, and faculty and
staff. These funds will also be used for
physical improvements, such as additional
cameras, emergency phones and proxy card access
systems and to offer additional safety programs
to the campus community.
