Presented by Bob DeWaay November 20, 2005
2Exemplary Women Who are Witnesses
- Matthew 2755, 56
- And many women were there looking on from a
distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee,
ministering to Him, among whom was Mary
Magdalene, along with Mary the mother of James
and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of
Zebedee.
3A Disciple Steps Forward
- Matthew 2757, 58
- And when it was evening, there came a rich man
from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had
also become a disciple of Jesus. This man went to
Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then
Pilate ordered it to be given over to him.
4Prophecy Fulfilled
- Isaiah 539
- His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He
was with a rich man in His death, Because He had
done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His
mouth.
5Joseph Buries Jesus Body
- Matthew 2759, 60
- And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a
clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new
tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock and he
rolled a large stone against the entrance of the
tomb and went away.
6Beloved Witnesses
- Matthew 2761
- And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other
Mary, sitting opposite the grave.
7The Jewish Leaders are Still Worried about Jesus
- Matthew 2762, 63
- Now on the next day, which is the one after the
preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees
gathered together with Pilate, and said, Sir, we
remember that when He was still alive that
deceiver said, After three days I am to rise
again.
8A Stolen Body The Oldest False Theory About the
Empty Tomb
- Matthew 2764
- Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made
secure until the third day, lest the disciples
come and steal Him away and say to the people,
He has risen from the dead, and the last
deception will be worse than the first.
9Jesus Predicted His Resurrection
- Matthew 1239, 40
- But He answered and said to them, An evil and
adulterous generation craves for a sign and yet
no sign shall be given to it but the sign of
Jonah the prophet for just as Jonah was three
days and three nights in the belly of the sea
monster, so shall the Son of Man be three days
and three nights in the heart of the earth.
10They Want to Keep Jesus in the Grave!
- Matthew 2765, 66
-
- Pilate said to them, You have a guard go, make
it as secure as you know how. And they went and
made the grave secure, and along with the guard
they set a seal on the stone.
11Two Marys At the Grave
- Matthew 281
- Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn
toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene
and the other Mary came to look at the grave.
12The Earth and the Guards Shake
- Matthew 282-4
- And behold, a severe earthquake had occurred,
for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven
and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon
it. And his appearance was like lightning, and
his garment as white as snow and the guards
shook for fear of him, and became like dead men.
13You Stop Fearing
- Matthew 285
- And the angel answered and said to the women,
Do not be afraid for I know that you are
looking for Jesus who has been crucified.
14Witnesses of the Empty Tomb
- Matthew 286
- He is not here, for He has risen, just as He
said. Come, see the place where He was lying.
15He Has Risen -- The Very Idea the Jewish
Leaders Feared
- Matthew 287
- And go quickly and tell His disciples that He
has risen from the dead and behold, He is going
before you into Galilee, there you will see Him
behold, I have told you.
16They Worship the Resurrected Christ
- Matthew 288, 9
- And they departed quickly from the tomb with
fear and great joy and ran to report it to His
disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and greeted
them. And they came up and took hold of His feet
and worshiped Him.
17Though They had Fled In Fear, Jesus Calls them
Brothers
- Matthew 2810
- Then Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid go
and take word to My brethren to leave for
Galilee, and there they shall see Me.
18Scripture Fulfilled
- Psalm 2222
- I will tell of Thy name to my brethren In the
midst of the assembly I will praise Thee.
19Applications
- Believe That God Raised Jesus from the Dead
- Be Comforted that the Lord Calls Believers
Brothers Even in Their Weaknesses
20Believe That God Raised Jesus from the Dead
- Romans 108, 9
- But what does it say? The word is near you, in
your mouth and in your heart -- that is, the
word of faith which we are preaching, that if you
confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and
believe in your heart that God raised Him from
the dead, you shall be saved
21The Lord Calls us Brothers
- Hebrews 211, 12
- For both He who sanctifies and those who are
sanctified are all from one Father for which
reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren,
saying, I will proclaim Thy name to My brethren,
In the midst of the congregation I will sing Thy
praise.
22Jesus Averts Gods Wrath and Helps us Overcome
Temptation
- Hebrews 217, 18
- Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren
in all things, that He might become a merciful
and faithful high priest in things pertaining to
God, to make propitiation for the sins of the
people. For since He Himself was tempted in that
which He has suffered, He is able to come to the
aid of those who are tempted.
