Analyze Learners
This unit will be taught to first grade students
who are from six to seven years old. My class
will already know what an ocean is and be able to
identify what a fish is from other animals. Also,
for the art project my students will also already
have the skills to be able to use crayons, paint,
scissors, and glue. There are no special needs or
skills for my class.
3

water, and on land (e.g. birds flying, fish

  • SC.1.4.2 Identify that most living things need
    water, food, and air.
  • SC.1.6.2 Develop respect and responsibility for

Utilize Media and Materials
  • Here I will give a day to day overview of my
    unit
  • Day 1
  • Ask questions to test students previous
knowledge. ( What is an ocean? Have you ever been
to an ocean? What do you know about them? )
  • Show students all oceans from a globe. Have them
identify the oceans on a class sized map.
  • Break students into groups and have each group
take an ocean. They will find out facts like
where the ocean is, what animals inhabit that
ocean, and the temperature of the ocean.
  • They will then report their findings to the
    class.

7
  • Day 2
  • Read The Magic School Bus on the Ocean Floor by
    Joanna Cole
  • Show pictures of coral reef
  • Show students tub of sand, rocks, and coral
pieces and use them to discuss various geographic
    features of the ocean floor.
  • Students will use their art supplies to make
their own ocean floor pictures then will identify
what each item is to the class.

8
  • Day 3
  • Put students into groups and assign them each a
    sea animal.
  • Each group will research their animal and find
answers to where they live, who are their
predators, what they eat, and what they look
    like.
  • They will report their findings to the class.
  • Then each student will create their own picture
    of the animal they researched.
  • I will place all their artwork on the bulletin
    board.

9
  • Day 4
  • Talk more about ocean animals.
  • Students will visit Finding Nemo website and view
the underwater classroom where they will learn
about sea animals and the sea floor. They will
take the quiz and receive a certificate and print
    it off to take home.
  • They will then be allowed to play games on the
site once they have completed the instructional
    activities.

10
  • Day 5
  • I will speak to students about pollution problem
of our oceans. The causes of the pollution and
how they can go about helping save our oceans.
  • They will learn how in the future they can help
our animals stay healthy and our oceans stay
    clean.
  • To finish the unit, the students will get into
groups and put on fishy play.

11
Require Learner Participation
  • I chose activities and lessons that would keep my
students moving around and keep them interested
so that they could stay focused on their tasks.
  • They will be interested in making their own sea
animals, sea bed, and interacting with a movie
site (Finding Nemo) that is very popular among
    this age group.
  • By giving them a chance to put on a play at the
end, it will give them something to look forward
    to.

12
Evaluate and Revise
  • Student achievement will be evaluated in various
ways. The first assessment will be the group
presentation on the oceans. Then they will be
assessed based on the second group presentation
of their ocean animal and their art work
including both the ocean floor and ocean animal.
Also, the students will be graded on the three
worksheets they completed throughout the lesson.
The last assessment will be the play they
    construct on their own.
