• NAACP- founded in 1909
• W.E.B. Du Bois
• Professor of History and Economics at the
  University of Atlanta from 1897-1919
• Purpose- fight for equal rights through court
  cases and legislation

Tearing Down Plessy v. Ferguson

• 1896-separate but equal facilities constitutional
• 1938- Gaines v. University of Missouri
• Lloyd Gaines ,a black man , wanted to attend MU
  law school Gaines denied
• State of Missouri did not have a black law school
  so they offered to pay his tuition to a Canadian
  law school

• Gaines sued MU
• Supreme Court decided Gaines needed a Missouri
  education if he was going to practice in Missouri
• Supreme Court- if there is no separate law school
  then he should attend MU law school

Morgan v. Virginia

• 1946
• Supreme Court decided that interstate buses can
  not segregate passengers

Chief Justice Fred Vinson

• 1946-1953
• Started to work toward equal rights by rejecting
  separate facilities if they were not full and
  exactly equal

Sweatt v. Painter

• 1950
• Herman Sweatt wanted to attend the University of
  Texas Law School
• The state of Texas had organized a black law
  school for Sweatt
• Sweatt refused to attend because it was inferior
  and not equal to the UT law school
• Supreme Court agreed

McLaurin v. Oklahoma State Regents

• 1950
• Black students admitted to state universiyies
  could not be segregated from other students
• Black students could not be compelled to sit,
  study, eat, or sleep apart from the other students
