Division I NCAA Initial-Eligibility Requirements
  • A "core course" must meet the following
  • The course must be considered college preparatory
    by the high school. For these purposes, college
    preparatory is defined as any course that
    prepares a student academically to enter a
    four-year collegiate institution upon graduation
    from high school.
  • The course must be taught at or above the high
    schools regular academic level. Remedial,
    special education or compensatory courses shall
    not be considered core courses (except for
    students with documented learning disabilities).

  • FULL-TIME ENROLLMENT AFTER AUGUST 1, 2008
  • A Qualifier is defined a high-school graduate
    presenting
  • a minimum GPA in a core curriculum of at least 16
  • academic courses. Minimum requirements, by area
    will be
  • English 4 years
  • Mathematics (at the level of Algebra I or
    higher)  3 years
  • Natural or Physical Science
  • (including at least one laboratory course, if
    offered by the high school) 2 years
  • Additional courses (in English, math, or
    natural/physical science) 1 year
  • Social Science   2 years
  • Additional courses (in any of the above areas or
    foreign language,
  • computer science, philosophy or nondoctrinal
    religion courses) 4 years

--When May They be Met?
  • Core-Course Requirement
  • All core courses must be completed by the high
    school graduation date of the prospects class
    (as determined by the first year of enrollment in
    HS).
  • If a student graduates within the core-curriculum
    time limitation, he or she may use one core
    course completed in the year after graduation
    (summer or academic year) but not later than one
    year after graduation to satisfy core course
    requirements.

  • A student diagnosed with a learning disability
    may be approved to use all core courses completed
    prior to initial full-time enrollment.

  • Test-Score Requirement
  • May be achieved while in high school or prep
    school.
  • May be achieved following graduation, up to the
    first instance of full-time collegiate
    enrollment.
  • May be achieved during, or following, part-time
    collegiate enrollment, provided full-time
    enrollment has not occurred.

  • Test-Score Requirement
  • The minimum test score requirement must be
    provided to the NCAA Eligibility Center by the
    appropriate testing agency.
  • The NCAA Eligibility Center will no longer accept
    test scores reported on transcripts as
    documentation of official scores.

    requirements for his/her chosen Division (I or

  • A Qualifier is eligible for practice,
    competition, and athletics scholarship money
    during his/her freshman year.

Non-Qualifier
  • WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
  • A Non-Qualifier does not meet all
    initial-eligibility requirements for his/her
    chosen Division (I or II).
  • WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?
  • A Non-Qualifier is not eligible for practice,
    competition, or athletics scholarship money
    during his/her freshman year.
