ALL of our students complete a sequence of
textile courses that include textile product
analysis and textile testing utilizing standard
methods in an actual textile testing laboratory.

10The Body Scanner
- Eight cameras
- Four laser light sources
- Collects 300,000 data points in 12 seconds
- Results in 3D image
- Results in a set of over 80 body measurements
11The Body Scanner
After the scan is completed, four views are
available to examine simultaneously.

12The Thermal Camera
Measures the amount of heat emitted from an
object or person . Temperature measurements are
used to redesign apparel when heat is an issue,
such as athletic or cold weather wear.
13Environmental Chamber
Garments can be tested in a variety of different
environmental conditions Temperature ranges from
-20F to 200F Humidity ranges from 5 to 95

Our curriculum reflects the global nature of the
apparel/textile complex from introductory to
senior level courses.

16Industry Collaboration Reebok
Students collaborate with Reebok to design impact
resistant sports apparel.

17Industry Collaboration Brooks Brothers
The Advanced CAD class collaborated with Brooks
Brothers to develop a Web site that would allow
for customization of womens professional
apparel. Designs were produced using U4ia and
Illustrator that could have interchangeable
fabrics, colors and styles.
18Industry Collaboration Malden Mills
Malden Mills, the makers of PolarTec fabrics,
challenged AMD students to develop prototypes
utilizing their innovative electric textiles.
The HEATME SCARF was developed by students
Michele Palmatier and Sarah Bokor. It is a 4-way
reversible scarf that can be heated for the
wearer's thermal satisfaction.
19Service Activities
Students in functional apparel design constructed
a high fashion dress using 100 mosquito netting
to bring awareness to the global problem of
malaria and ways to prevent it.
20Fashion Production Presentation
Annually, our students produce a professional
level fashion presentation and exhibition of
original apparel designs to an audience of over
1300 in Finch on CMUs campus.
21Study Abroad
Paris, London, Leeds, and Hong Kong are some of
the destinations for our students who desire to
study abroad. In fact, more majors in apparel
merchandising and design study abroad than any
other major at CMU.

Students have the opportunity to participate in
an intensive study of the garment district in NYC
as well as other regional fashion centers.

24FAMD(Fashion Association of Merchandising
Design)
FAMD is an active student organization that
serves as an informal network for students with
an interest in design and fashion. FAMD provides
leadership opportunities for students and offers
professionally related activities outside of the
classroom.
