Did you know that what you eat can affect the
environment? This is very true if you are a meat
lover. Scientists say how food is made can damage
the planet in many ways. For many years,
scientists have been worried because the Earth is
getting warmer. This is called global warming.
When more and more gases are released, they
prevent heat from escaping. Thats why the
temperature is getting higher. If global warming
continues, life will get very difficult for all
living things. So, what does global warming have
to do with food? Huge amounts of gas are
released every year from making and eating food.
For example, when making a hamburger, lots of

The cow has to be fed and raised on farmland.
The cow has to be butchered, too. And the meat
has to be packaged and sent to markets. All these
steps need machines, cars and lots of fuel. By
the time you eat your hamburger, many gases have
been released into the air. So, if we eat less
meat, its healthier for our planet. Does this
mean vegetables do less harm? Yes. Scientists say
growing and eating vegetables release only small
amounts of gases into the air. Why dont you
think about changing your diet? Eating less meat
and more vegetables can save the Earth!
