Metadata Services Goal
  • Within three years, services provided under
OCLCs Metadata program will transform OCLCs
traditional cataloging service to a comprehensive
metadata creation and management service for
    librarians, library users and information
    partners.

11
Megatrends for Metadata
  • The overall demand for quality metadata has
    dramatically increased
  • The number of libraries requiring authoritative
    electronic metadata continues to increase
    worldwide
  • A large number of library professionals (40-50)
are eligible for retirement in the next ten
years. Professional catalogers in particular are
not being developed in library schools to take
    their place.

  • Provide access to more metadata resources
  • Improve the productivity of metadata creation
  • Continue to play a major role in standards
  • Provide library staff with more efficient tools

32
We return a results set consisting of WorldCat
records on the topic, sorted in descending order
by the number of libraries that hold the item
(most widely held items display first). This
results set can be limited to books or expanded

WorldCat. When the user clicks on a title . . .
33
A search is sent to OCLC, which retrieves
additional bibliographic information and displays
a library locator pop-up dialog box. The box
includes a space for entering a zip code.

The user enters his/her zip code, hits go, and
a search for that zip is run against a table here

zip code that hold the item, according to
WorldCat holdings information. Note that the
user can expand the search beyond the zip code.
Also note that the names of the institutions
displayed are hotlinks. Clicking on Ohio State
