Title: To Kill A Mockingbird
1To Kill A Mockingbird
- By Harper Lee
- An Interactive Presentation
2Background Information
- To Kill a Mockingbird was the only novel ever
written by Harper Lee. It is considered by many
to be the greatest novel of the twentieth century
by a one time author. - The story takes place in the fictitious town of
Maycomb, Alabama. Although there is no town with
the name of Maycomb in Alabama, most people
believe that the story is loosely based around
the childhood of Harper Lee in the town of
Monroeville, Alabama. - In this PowerPoint we will examine images based
around events and places that bring color to the
novel.

3The Theme of Race
- One of the central themes of the story is the
relationship between races in the town of
Maycomb. The issues confronting the characters
of the story can be found throughout society in
the 1930s and beyond into todays society. -
- Find three examples of prejudice and racism in
the story. Describe each in a short paragraph.

The picture above is an excellent example of
segregation. People living in the same town
would be separated everywhere from schools to the
water they drank. This unequal separation was
based upon race.

- Although the scenes of schooling do not dominate
the storyline, they offer an interesting
comparison to our current education system.
Using the pictures of school houses and students
(from the time period), along with the sections
from the story, write two paragraphs comparing
1930s education and your experiences in school.
5Memorable Places
- One of the most impressive pieces in To Kill A
Mockingbird is the places Harper Lee describes
and the feeling she gives them. The pictures on
the left show two of these places. - 1. This artistic representation shows Boo
Radleys house. Although there was no actual Boo
Radley, many believe Harper Lee based the
character on a recluse from her hometown. - 2. The courthouse places a key role in the
story. This picture shows the courthouse in
Monroeville that is believed to be the basis for
the one in the story. - Choose a place from your own life that would
make a great scene for a story scene. Describe
it in a brief paragraph and then show it
artistically.
