- It aint farms anymore,
- but ag biz is the largest
- Working landscapes
- Mixed economy
- Rural resort or amenity
6Fund Rural?
- Grantmakers often times have too little
perspective or rural although it is the same
distance to Vail as it is to Akron - they just
dont visit! - Not on the screen!
- If more people in urban, then why rural?
- The proposals we receive are not up to par from
rural locations - maybe all of the smart people
have moved to the city.

- To counter - went to the experts and the real
experts!

deficit - Second generation are still considered new comers

- community cannot be viable in they have to travel
long distances to access services - controversial issues are difficult to fund
locally
Need in rural (chronic illness, housing,
underinsured, poverty, infrastructure, disease,
aging isolation of aged, segregation)

19Reactions from funders
- Rural people are unique, make the grant money go
further, and are appreciative - affects the whole community
- not lost in a large budget
- the people are amazing!!

- Avoid the large bucket approach
- Look for the can do attitude
- Dont use city ideas - Idalia
- Build capacity
- Develop relationships - stay tuned in
- Success of the effort
- Build incremental success
- Listen and learn!
