  • To Deb Henton, Principal
  • From Sharon Stone, FACS Teacher
  • Date January 6, 2005
  • RE What has been done in my classroom to
improve the reading skills of my students?
  • Before students read either aloud or
independently the class reviews new terms and
discusses what they already know about the topic.
The Family and Consumer Science Classes I teach
are mostly factual like the Basic Standards Tests
reading excerpts so this tried and true
strategy should be helpful to students who have
    not passes the BST.
  • Also we used one of the vocabulary strategies
that were explained in the fall in-service. I
had the student write the word in the center of a
3x5 card or in their journal, then the
definition, the opposite of the word and then
draw a picture that would help them remember the
    word.
  • I have always had my students write an
autobiography. One of the questions given in the
autobiography outline is how many books do you
read a year? What magazine or newspapers do you
read? Not only does this activity help me learn
about my students it also is a pretty good snap
shot of their reading and writing skills.

Mathematic BellringerEXAMPLE
  • How much protein do you need? Protein builds
muscles. Figure out how much protein you need
according to your weight. You need which is ___
grams of protein for 80 of your weight in
    kilograms.

12
My method of solving the problem
  • Your weight in pounds divided 2.2 your weight in
    kilograms
  • Your weight in kilograms X 80 number of grams
    of protein needed a day.
  • Be aware protein in the following
  • 1 C Cereal with ½ C Milk 10 grams of Protein
  • Ham and Cheese Sandwich16 grams of Protein
  • 3 OZ. Chicken 27 grams of Protein
  • 1 glass of Milk 8 grams of Protein

13
Colleagues Method of Teaching
  • X your weight in pounds
  • Y your weight in kilograms
  • Y (X/22)
  • Y X 0.8grams of protein you need each day

14
