• Erythemetous swelling of the superficial skin
• From blood plasma that leaks out of small blood
  vessels in the skin
• Caused by the release of histamine
• Wheals occur in response to an allergen
• May occur anywhere on the body

Food Urticaria

• Clear-cut patterns
• Reproducible
• Never appears the next day
• Spices
• Hidden foods (celery, nuts, eggs)
• Dyes, preservatives
• Rare

Medication Urticaria

• NSAIDs are most common cause of hives
• ACE I and II rarely (
• Associated with laryngeal edema and intubation
• Codeine and narcotics cause histamine
  release and hives
• Drug allergies cause erythema multiforme or
  hives

ACE, angiotensin-converting enzyme NSAIDs,
nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Cholinergic Urticaria

• Small (3-4 mm) hives
• Intensely pruritic
• Large flares, flushing
• After exercise, heat, hot showers, anxiety
• Red heads, fair skin, blush easily
• Reproduced by heating
