Title: IQER

1
IQER
  • How to get the best from the process
  • Peter Steer

2
Overall
  • Developmental engagement reports are not
published and so DEs represent an opportunity
that should not be missed for quality engagement
  • The IQER process fundamentally belongs to FECs
    which brings benefits and responsibilities

3
Overall
  • IQER is about the management of education-- not
concentrating on the individual subject level
  • This may require a committee structure to
    coordinate programmes from several awarding
bodies covering quality assurance and enhancement
    and also resourcing

4
The process
  • The agreed IQER process is fundamentally the same
as in the pilot but there some relatively minor
    adjustments
  • For instance the core themes of academic
standards, quality of learning opportunities and
public information replace the core questions
(but the ground covered remains the same)

5
Key features of the Process
  • The SED
  • A key document that uses mainly existing
documents to critically evaluate the provision
  • Among other things, the SED needs a strong
student focus, recognition of the Academic
Infrastructure and its use and explicit reference
    to quality enhancement

6
Key features of the Process
  • The INs and the SRF
  • An IN is a key link between the College and
    the team
  • INs look both ways they have panel and
    College responsibilities
  • INs need to think carefully about the nature
of their questions and who should answer them

7
Key features of the Process
  • It is helpful if the IN does not have direct
responsibility for most of the areas under
    discussion
  • The transition from IN to SRF needs thought
  • The IN has a key role in setting the tone for
the discussions between the team and the College

8
Key features of the Process
  • The Preparatory Meeting
  • Getting the correct staff to the meeting, and
    some students, is crucial
  • Staff generally should use the opportunity to
enhance their understanding of the method
  • Staff should make suggestions as to the best
way to organise the team visits

9
Key features of the Process
  • Student Involvement
  • SWS
  • Student Involvement in the management of
    education
  • Management of Resources
  • Involvement of the Awarding Bodies
  • The final version of IQER has new protocols
    here

10
Key Features of the Process
  • Public Information
  • Perhaps use DE to help development in this
    increasingly important area
  • Covers accuracy and completeness
  • Needs mechanism in place to keep information
    up to date

11
Overall
  • You gain most by fully engaging in the process,
    particularly the DE
  • The process will be least painful, and most
rewarding in terms of value added, if the areas I
have covered have been considered in detail
    before IQER starts
  • The cost of the process will be minimised by
using existing documents as far as possible
